Evidence Classification

DIRECT vs. INDIVIDUAL CHARACTERISTICS

Examine each piece of evidence carefully. Decide whether its characteristics are class or idividual. Class characteristics can place the evidence into a group — like a brand, make, or general type — helping narrow down your suspect pool. Individual characteristics point to one unique source — a single person, object, or origin — and can directly link a suspect to the crime. Use your investigative judgment to classify each correctly. The details matter.

Details matter, rookie. Re-examine the evidence.

The Case of the Dead Man's Hand

Scene Inventory Training

Your job is to determine the proper order of the investigation, examine each piece of evidence, determine its classification, and identify which division of the crime lab should handle it. Think like an investigator: follow proper procedure, log each discovery, and note how the evidence connects. Each decision brings you closer to understanding what really happened — and who’s trying to cover their tracks. Stay sharp, detective. Every detail matters.

Call came in from The Silver Cue Bar just after midnight. Busboy taking out trash found a bloody towel and reported a scuffle in the alley out back. Patrol units got there fast — found blood, a dropped wallet, a cracked cell phone, a note and a pickup truck with it's lights on but no one home. Before we touch the evidence, we need to run this by the book. Let’s map out how this investigation should unfold.
Good work, detective. Now that we’ve got our plan of action locked down, it’s time to start cataloging what we’ve got. Log each item, classify it, and decide which division it heads to. Every scrap of evidence tells a story — we just have to read it right.
Not quite, detective. The facts aren’t lining up yet. Review Evidence Classification and if you need help remembering Crime Lab Divisions, Click the tool tip.

Well, you definitely need to review your procedures, detective...but the clock’s ticking, and this scene isn’t getting any fresher. Crime scenes do have time limits. So… what’s the call? We circle back and give it another try, or move on to the next phase, and hope that it doesn't come back to haunt us.

Vehicle is locked, no one inside, lights on — no probable cause to search. Better Check the License Plate and see if it leads us anywhere.

Well, we can run the plates, but NCIC will only show it’s a rental, We better track down that rental company to ID the renter. In the meantime, that GPS unit’s in plain view — let’s trace the route data and check where it ended

Well, looks like we’ve got some evidence to go on, detective. Question is — do we keep the momentum and interview our witness while the facts are still fresh, or call him in later and call it a night? Can’t lie, the thought of a steaming cup of coffee and a half dozen donuts is sounding mighty fine right about now.

Enter Witness Inventory Number

Alright, looks like we’ve covered everything here. Evidence is logged. Let’s hand it over to the lab folks — maybe they’ll dig up something solid while we’re on the road. Let’s head on over to that address we pulled from the GPS ping data. Out on the edge of town — quiet neighborhood, plenty of shadows. Something tells me this next stop won’t be friendly. Get ready, detective — we’re headed for the outskirts. Let’s see what the night’s got waiting for us.

Down with boring content in your classes: do it to motivate

When we are told a story, it moves us. It can even touch us, making us remember stories up to 20 times more than any other content we might consume. The step-by-step interactive visual communication:

  • Plan the structure of your content.
  • Give visual weight to key and main points.
  • Define secondary messages with interactivity.
  • Establish a flow through the content.
  • Measure the results.

Describe the topic and the content you will cover in class

Don't forget to emphasize why the topic is interesting

With Genially templates, you can include visual resources to engage the class from minute 1. You can also highlight key content to facilitate assimilation and even embed external content that surprises and provides more context to the topic: videos, photos, audios... Whatever you want! Need more reasons to use dynamic content in class? Well: 90% of the information we assimilate comes through sight and, additionally, we retain 42% more information when the content is moving.

We better capture the visual content. This type of content is associated with cognitive and psychological mechanisms. Things enter through the eyes; the first image is what counts. We associate visual content with emotions. Implement Visual Thinking in the classroom with Genially: organize information and knowledge much easier and visually through images, graphs, infographics, and simple drawings. That's the way to go! Our brain is prepared to consume visual content. And it makes sense: 90% of the information we process comes to us through sight. That's why visual content helps in more agile learning in many cases.
