What is poetry?

Poetry is a form of writing that focuses on the arrangment of words to express ideas or feelings. There are different elements to poetry that make it different from regular text.

Elements of Poetry

Elements of poetry include:
  • Structure: the arrangment of lines of groups of lines (which are called stanzas)
  • Rhythm: the pattern of words, created by the arrangment of stressed and unstressed syllables (called meter)
  • Rhyme: two or more words with the same ending sounds
  • Figurative Language: words with meaning beyond their everyday definitions
