I Can: -define Matter and its states

What is Matter?

Properties of Matter:-mass -volume -density

Almost everything is made of matter!

Matter is anything that takes up space.

Matter can be natural or man-made.

States of Matter

Matter exists in three main states: solid, liquid, and gas.

Changes of state are physical changes, they do not change the chemical composition of the substance.

Examples of phase changes include melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation.

Phase Changes

Phase changes occur when matter transitions from one state to another.

Melting, freezing, vaporization, condensation, sublimation, and deposition are the six common phase changes.

Energy is either released or absorbed during these phase changes.

Check out how Water goes through Phase Changes!

CHANGES IN STATE

Changes in state refer to the physical changes that matter undergoes when it transitions from one state (solid, liquid, or gas) to another.

Due to changes in TEMPERATURE and PRESSURE

Changes in State

Evaporation

Melting

Freezing

Freezing is the process by which a liquid is cooled and transformed into a solid. This occurs when the temperature of the material reaches its freezing point.

Evaporation is the process by which a liquid is heated and transformed into a gas. This occurs when the temperature of the material reaches its boiling point.

Melting is the process by which a solid is heated and transformed into a liquid. This occurs when the temperature of the material reaches its melting point.

Changes in State

Condensation

Sublimation

Deposition

Sublimation is the process of a solid turning directly into a gas without first becoming a liquid.

Deposition is the opposite of sublimation, where a gas turns directly into a solid without first becoming a liquid.

Condensation is the process by which a gas is cooled and transformed into a liquid. This occurs when the temperature of the material reaches its condensation point.

Question to think about:

What causes this change in the gas in the bottle/balloon? What kind of change happened here?

The increase/decrease of heat causes the change in the gas. This is a physical change.

Phase Changes Demonstration Video

Simulation Time!

  1. Visit the States of Matter and observe the molecular arrangement in solids, liquids, and gases.
  1. Adjust the temperature to demonstrate the processes of melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation, sublimation, and deposition through phase changes.
  1. Additionally, adjust the pressure, change the types of atoms, and explore the interactions section!oms, and explore the interactions section!

Question to think about:

What do you notice?

Why do you think the metal and plastic spoons behave differently?

All matter has physical properties — features we can observe or measure without changing what the matter is.

Physical Changes

Changes that occur when matter changes state.-change in energy within the matter -can be undone -does not change what the substance is -no new substance is formed

Chopping wood

Making sugar water

Boiling water

Question to think about:

Is making a popsicle a physical change?

Pressure

Pressure in the atmosphere, Earth, and laboratory can also change the state of matter.

TEMPERATURE

Temperature is the measurement that tells how hot ot cold a material is. When a material's temperature changes, its state may change.
