The Earth spins

that Means you do too!!

Just the Facts:

WHERE THE EARTH IS

The Earth is: - spherical -the third planet from the sun - in orbit around the sun The Earth ROTATES (spins) on a tilted axis around the sun, meaning - the Earth is tilted!

The Earth's rotation on its axis causes day and night, which causes shadows to change throughout the 24 hours.

During Daytime:

During Nighttime

Half of the Earth is facing the Sun: We get direct sunlight, which makes it bright outside, makes it warm and casts shadows.

The other half of the Earth is NOT facing the sun. This means it's dark outside, and we get to see the moon, instead.

Shadows:

- Afternoon/ Night : the Sun is lowering/ setting in the West, the shadows are lengthening again and on the opposite side of the tree.

Morning: the sun is rising in the East, and is lower in the sky. The shadows are long on the opposite side of the tree.

Noon: the Sun is high and directly above. The shadows are short.

The light rays from the sun touch your opaque house and create shadows. What would these shadows look like at 10am? Draw your house, the sun and the shadow.

The photo shows a picture of the Earth in the foreground, a line through it labelled "axis", a circle drawn around it, labelled "night" on the dark side and "day" on the side exposed to the light, where the Sun can be seen on the far end of the photo. The background is completely black.

One the far left of the image the Sun is shown, five thin arrows pointing off of it towards the Earth on the left. The Earth is labelled on the side towards the sun "Day" and the other side "Night". The tilted Axis is labelled as well.
