They are registered dietitians who are experts in the field of sports nutrition. Sport dietitians are set apart from general dietitians, in the fact that they focus on athletes. They specialize in advising and counseling them based on their nutrition needs.

What do they do?

A sports dietitian's tasks for the day can vary depending on what kind of athletes they are working with and their goals, as well as what environment they're working in. Some common work tasks include:

  • Assess each athlete's physiology, performance demands, and other factors
  • Understand different physiological demands of many sports
  • Provide information on how nutrition impacts health, performance, and recovery
  • Help provide athletes with nutrionally based strategies based on their needs

Average Salary?

The average salary for a sports dietitian varies, depending on who they are working with. Currently, their salary range is at about $55,000 to $75,000 a year, which is roughly equivalent to about $29 to $40 per hour.

Educational Requirements?

  1. Bachelor's degree in clinical nutrition
  2. Master's in nutrition or exercise physiology
  3. completion of a supervised dietetics program
  4. Registration/licensure by Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as required by state
