Context, Style, and Subject,

This is an image of Ethiopian Gospels on parchment. It was likely produced in Ethiopia in the 14th century. The parchment was colored with tempera and ink. This type of image also gives an example of jewel-like style, bold, vivid, and bright color palette. The title of this leaf is "the Crucifixion, with Christ Represented as Lamb on Top of the Cross" and is a part of the scribe "Mätre Krestos." Many of these scribes showed religious texts or were hagiographies. In this leaf, Christ is represented by a lamb who is on top of a large cross to represent the Crucifixion of Christ. There is also a clear Byzantine influence in this leaf. The influence is known through trade routes but can also be seen within the way they use iconography in their art.

Connection to Reading/Modules

This object depicts a leaf from Ethiopian Gospels. This week's discussion about Ethiopian art ties in with our discussion last week about Byzantyn art because the Byzantyn empire had a large influence on Ethiopia. This can be seen through Iconoclasm and through the fragments of scribes that we have scattered show that these scribes were valuable and traded, even in small fragments. This also ties in with reading this week as it directly talks about differnt types of Ethiopian Manuscripts. The reading mainly talks about a type of manuscript called a sənsul, which is comrised of pieces of parchment stiched together and folded accordian style.
