Designing Effective Professional Development

Setting Up PD for a State Curriculum Change

Scenario and Goals

The state is planning for a state-wide curriculum change. Educators must align their instruction and assessments to the new standards so that students can find success within the classroom. Beneficial PD must be designed for maximum impact. School Goals:

  • effective and confident implementation
  • support readiness and mastery

Timeline: 0ne-year plan

The new curriculum will be implemented within one 1 year. To ensure educators are ready for the new curriculum, there must be three different phases included in the curriculum imlementation plan.

Andragogy Principles In PD

1- Self Concept

2- Learning from Experience

3- Readiness to Learn

4- Immediate Applications

5- Intrinisic Motivation

6- Need to Know

Self Concept

  • Choice-based pathways
  • Teacher-led Sessions
  • Digital Portfolios

Educators need autonomy and self-direction when they are learning something new.

(Bouchrika, 2024)

Learning from Experience

  • Peer-led Workshops
  • Lesson Study Teams
  • Reflective Discussions

Readiness to Learn

How can I implement this principle? - Align PD with classroom timing - PD just before the curriculum launch - Embed follow-up coaching and PD opportunities

When PD targets immediate actions and ideas, educators are more willing to participate and learn.

(Cloke, 2024)

Immediate applications

Standard Practice Educators could have the option of piloting different units or standards that will be in the upcoming curriculum.

Lesson PlanningHands-on learning experiences where educators can review the standards and develop lessons/curriculum pacing guides.

Models Give academic coaches and district leaders model the content that will be in the new curriculum. This will give educators the opportunity to reflect on the new curriculum and apply it in their own classroom.

Intrinsic Motivation

Adults are more motivated by internal personal factors rather than external factors (Bouchrika, 2024).

How can educators be motivated? - Give educators choices in the implementation process - Emphasize the purpose of the new curriculum - Encouragement

Need to Know

Communication is key! How can this principle be implemented? - Share the why (evidence/state-wide goals) - Provide examples of how the curriculum will be implemented - Encourage questions - Outline the timeline and expectations

(Cloke, 2024)

Importance of Andragogy

Provides adults with a more engaging and beneficial learning experience

Allows the learning to be differentiated

Focuses on problem-centered learning

Promotes flexibility and application

(goFLUENT, 2021)

Maximizing the Impact of the PD

Important Considerations

  • Make the PD applicable to educator needs
  • Ensure the PD is engaging
  • Provide hands-on and active participation opportunities
  • Provide continuous support
  • Encourage reflection opportunities
  • Apply Knowles' Principles to allow for differentiation
