halloween

Halloween, a holiday observed annually on October 31 and noted for its pagan origins and its Christian roots as well as its secular traditions.

how is it celebrated

In much of Europe and most of North America, observance of Halloween is today largely nonreligious, celebrated with parties, spooky costumes, pumpkin carvings called jack-o’-lanterns, and trick or treat.

Pumpkins

The main and most well-known symbol of Halloween is the pumpkin carved in the shape of a skull. It is also called Jack’s lantern. This symbol comes from the ancient Celts, who made lanterns from turnips to scare away evil spirits. In the United States, turnips were hard to find, so they were replaced with pumpkins. The first lanterns appeared as early as 1837.

+INFO

Fancy dress

Halloween costumes originate from the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain, when people wore animal skins and masks to scare away evil spirits, who they believed came to earth on the night of October 31st to November 1st.

Halloween Signs and Traditions

Do not kill spiders.

Always keep windows and doors closed to prevent evil spirits from entering.

Do not turn around if you hear footsteps behind you — it could be the dead.

Do not let a black cat into the house — it might be an evil spirit.

Traditional Halloween Dishes

Caramel apples are a very popular dish prepared for All Saints' Day. Pumpkin pie and apple bread are also baked for Halloween.
