Inputs and Outputs of Photosynthesis

Inputs: Sunlight, carbon dioxide (CO₂), and water (H₂O) are needed for photosynthesis.Outputs: Photosynthesis produces glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆), which stores energy, and oxygen (O₂), which is released into the water.

Click each number in order to explore the process of photosynthesis.
Sunlight reaches the euphotic zone.
Phytoplankton take in carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the water and water (H₂O) from their surroundings.
Oxygen (O₂) is produced as a byproduct and released into the water.
Using sunlight, phytoplankton convert CO₂ and H₂O into glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆), a sugar that stores chemical energy.
The glucose gives energy to phytoplankton and the animals that eat them.
