Daily Routines in Action

Start

Today we’ll learn how to talk about what we usually do and what we are doing right now!

But... HOW DO WE EXPRESS DAILY ROUTINES

The Present Simple: Habits and Routines

'I usually have eggs for breakfast'

'I brush my teeth every morning'

'I wake up at 10:10 a.m.'

The Present Simple: Form

AFFIRMATIVE: Subject + verb (+s/es) → She plays football.NEGATIVE: Subject + don’t/doesn’t + verb → She doesn’t play football. QUESTION: Do/Does + subject + verb → Does she play football?

The Present Simple: When do we use it?

We often use (frequency adverbs):

  • always
  • usually
  • often
  • sometimes
  • never
  • every day
  • on Mondays

Examples: I always brush my teeth after breakfast. She goes to school every day.

But... what if we think of what is happening only now?

The Present Continuous: Actions happening now

In the image...

...they are eating breakfast.

...they are brushing their teeth.

...she is waking up.

Actions happening now and temporary actions (e.g: this week)

The Present Continuous: Form

AFFIRMATIVE: am/is/are + verb-ing → He is reading. NEGATIVE: am/is/are + not + verb-ing → They aren’t listening. QUESTION: Am/Is/Are + subject + verb-ing → Are you studying now?

The Present Continuous: When do we use it?

We use:

  • now
  • right now
  • at the moment
  • today
  • this week
  • currently

Examples: We are learning verbal tenses right now. We are playing a game later today.

Little practice!!

Play the guitar (profesionally)

Play a videogame (now)

Work out (hobby)

Do homework (after school)
