Green Hands, Cool Schools Nature-Based Adventures for Kids

1st students' meeting

"Each child brings one leaf (or a flower/stone/pinecone if easier) from their schoolyard, balcony, or nearby green space. In the online session, teachers invite children (one by one) to hold it up to the camera and say:“This is my leaf..."

Teachers take shots to collect all the findings of their students into a shared “Leaf Album” for the project partners

🌿 Goals of the Activity Encourage Connection with Nature: Support children in exploring and appreciating the natural world around them, wherever they live — a leaf from the schoolyard, balcony, or nearby park. Foster Multilingual Expression: Give children the confidence to speak in their own language, showing pride in their cultural and linguistic identity. Develop Observation and Description Skills: Help children notice and describe characteristics such as color, texture, shape, and size.

🌿 Goals of the Activity Promote Sharing and Belonging: Build a sense of classroom community by letting each child contribute something personal to the group’s shared “Leaf Album.” Introduce Early Scientific Curiosity: Encourage children to think about nature — where leaves come from, why they look different, or how seasons affect them.

🌱 Value and Learning Outcomes for Children Respect for Diversity: Hearing many languages during the session shows that everyone’s voice and culture are valued equally. Language and Communication Skills: Speaking about their leaf in their home language helps children develop confidence and fluency, which strengthens all language learning (including second languages later on). Social and Emotional Connection: Sharing personal finds promotes pride, empathy, and connection — children see both differences and similarities among their peers’ experiences.

Creativity and Self-Expression:Each child presents their object in their own way, showing individuality and imagination. Environmental Awareness and Appreciation: Through direct contact with natural materials, children begin to care for and respect nature. Digital Participation and Collaboration: The shared “Leaf Album” shows how an online activity can still be meaningful, cooperative, and real-world connected.
