Reflecting on my musical education timeline, I appreciated that I was presented with a relatively comprehensive overview of music history. I was an eager student, and perhaps some of the things I remember don’t represent the experience of most of my peers, but music education was a consistent part of the K–12 public school curriculum. The earlier parts of the timeline focused heavily on European musical developments, which I think many students found less engaging. I found it interesting that the study of “classical” music seemed to stop in the 1900s. While I was aware of composers like Debussy and Stravinsky, I didn’t learn much about contemporary composers beyond the repertoire I encountered in wind ensemble. I also remember wondering why improvisation was a common practice for composers like Bach and Mozart but didn’t remain part of modern classical training. The musical traditions that reflected the community of my school system were represented, though mostly through current popular music. Traditional and folk music from other parts of the world, however, were largely absent, leaving a gap in understanding the global and cultural diversity of musical expression.
