Mock Morris
Concord
The Symphonic Band opened its night with a trip through colonial America. "Concord" by Clare Grundman is a blend of 3 songs from the Revolutionary War: "The White Cockade",: America", and—of course—"Yankee Doodle." The piece begins with a piercing blast of bright, bold brass that’s accompanied by a light and bouncy woodwind melody. Throughout the piece, you’ll hear a classic piccolo solo followed by the snap, crack, and pop of the snare drum, providing an engaging contrast to the soft, airy tune.
Mock MOrris
The next composition can be best described as ‘crisp’; Mock Morris by Percy Grainger is a lively, rhythmic piece that brings an air of cheerfulness. As bright clarinet tunes prance throughout the beginning, new harmonies take the spotlight; a rich bassoon adds a deep complexity to the warm tunes, while the saxophones add a playful touch.
Pirates of the Carribean
The final piece on the Symphonic Band’s repertoire journeys listeners across the 7 seas. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, arranged by Jay Bocook, is an exhilarating, powerful piece that tells the tale of 3 allies as they venture through dire obstacles to save Jack Sparrow. It begins with a repetitive, yet driving, rhythm that keeps the audience engaged before intensifying into a grandiose “call-to-action”. Suddenly, the climax fades into a melancholy dirge as a somber oboe solo takes the spotlight. Slowly, momentum builds, and a hopeful anthem of defiance takes over as the heroes gain new resolve in their quest.
