Family supports needed for AAC devices

Implementation of ACC with Students

Parents are provided traings once it has been determined that a child needs an AAC device. Newsletters with updates and contact information are provided monthly. Parents are encouraged to ask questions and schedule meetings if they have any concerens. The major advice given to parents is to practice with their students at home and teach them that they are not toys but their way of communication.

Their is no set of rules or stratagies used to teach students how to use AAC devices, it is an individualized plan set based on observations and information provided by professionals surrounding the student. It is important for students to see thier teachers, aids, etc. model the use of the divice as much as possible. It is also important to accept whatever form of communication that the child chooses to use.
