Amityville House

In the little Long Island town of Amityville presides a house that is connected to a most gruesome scene of mass murder. On the night of November 13, 1974, Ronald J. DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family, which included his two parents and four siblings. Although his alleged motive for the killings has changed multiple times over the years, DeFeo originally claimed that demonic voices forced him to commit such a horrid crime that forevermore haunted the house. The haunting was made evident when George and Kathy Lutz purchased the home only a little over a year later but did not even live there an entire month with their family before leaving it. They claimed a severe amount of paranormal activity drove them from the household. Such occurrences included odd odors, slime oozing down the walls and out of the keyholes, members of the family levitating in their beds, and cold spots in areas of the house. A priest was even called in to bless the house, but was demanded to leave by the spirits, who allegedly screamed at him to "Get out!"

It was these occurrences and more that sparked the Amityville Horror House phenomenon, which has served as the basis for numerous books, documentaries, and movies. However, the validity of the family's paranormal misfortune has often been under intense scrutiny. Skeptics believe that the couple concocted the idea because they suffered from both financial and legal issues. The Lutz's former lawyer even stated that the family devised the plan "over many bottles of wine." There have also been other owners of the home who lived there with no issues. But there are facts in support of the Lutz family's claims. Both George and Kathy passed a lie detector test to prove the truth of their story. Their son, Daniel, claims that even to this day he is plagued by nightmares from living in the house, and that it continues to ruin his life. So, which side of the story is correct? You will have to be the judge. The house remains a private residence and is currently on the market as of January 2020.

Winchester Mystery House

Inventory

♪♬ø

Convinced that she was being haunted by the ghosts of those who had been killed by Winchester firearms, Sarah Winchester, widow of the infamous William Wirt Winchester and heiress to a majority of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, bought an unfinished farmhouse in San Jose, California. She was instructed by a medium to move West from her New Haven, Connecticut home after both her infant daughter and husband passed away of disease. If she would continually build upon the house, the medium had said, the spirits of the victims of her family’s rifles would be placated.

It was in 1884 that she purchased the home, and construction did not cease on it until her death in September of 1922. The Queen Anne Style Victorian mansion consists of 160 rooms, 10,000 windows, 2,000 doors, 52 skylights, 47 stairways and fireplaces, 17 chimneys, and 6 kitchens. There was no master plan for how the house was to look, only that Winchester herself guided the workers as they haphazardly expanded the mansion. This led to the 24,000 square feet house containing strange and unusual designs, such as doors that opened to walls, stairs that went only to ceilings, and windows that overlooked other rooms. The peculiar layout has been attributed to her attempts to confuse the ghosts that haunted her. The house also contains secret passages for the same reason, as well as only one working bathroom out of the 13 that were built. To further complicate things for the spirits, Winchester is said to have never slept in the same room consecutively.

So, who are these ghosts, exactly? Although there is not much to find regarding the spirits of the victims of the Winchester rifles, both employees of the mansion and visiting patrons have claimed to have had ghostly encounters with a few of the original workers and even Sarah herself. One of spirits that has been frequently spotted is a mustached man that dons white overalls and a boater hat. Referred to as "Clyde", he is often found attempting to repair the ballroom fireplace or pushing a wheelbarrow in the basement. Others have heard footsteps that have always seem to come from one floor above, as well as the shuffling of feet to and from Mrs. Winchester's main bedroom. People have felt unexplainable tugs on their clothing, ghostly forms have been seen gliding around corners, and strange things have appeared in both surveillance footage and photographs.

With the repeated pattern of 13 and arachnid-designed pieces throughout the house, as well as rooms like the Seance Room and the Witches Cap, the mansion has attracted numerous experts that have attempted to debunk the paranormal activity, going as far back as Houdini's attempt in 1924. Since then, many notable psychics, mediums, and paranormal investigators have visited the Winchester Mystery House in search of answers. The house has been considered a "Top Destination" by several notable sources, including USA Today and Time Magazine. It has been featured on many television programs, newspapers, magazines, news channels, and has served as a main topic for stories, books, and films. To say that the mansion has been influential is an understatement, as it has inspired even the likes of Disney for its Haunted Mansion ride. It is designated as a California historical landmark and currently serves as a tourist attraction
