Aktiivinen Euroopan kansalaisuus vahvistaa demokratiaa, edistää yhtenäisyyttä moninaisuudessa ja varmistaa, että EU:n politiikat heijastavat kansalaisten ääniä ja tarpeita. Kansalaisaktiivisuus antaa yksilöille mahdollisuuden osallistua Euroopan tulevaisuuden muokkaamiseen - ei vain oman maansa asukkaina vaan yhteisen eurooppalaisen yhteisön jäseninä.
Opettajat auttavat muokkaamaan nuorista aktiivisia, vastuullisia ja sitoutuneita Euroopan kansalaisia. He tekevät tämän opettamalla tietoa, rohkaisemalla osallistumaan, vaalimalla arvoja ja innostamalla toimintaan - sekä luokkahuoneessa että sen ulkopuolella.

Oppimistavoitteet
- Tutustutaan aktiivisen kansalaisuuden käsitteeseen ja sen keskeisiin periaatteisiin ja arvoihin.
- Korostetaan äänestämisen merkitystä demokraattisten yhteiskuntien ylläpitämisessä ja aktiivisen kansalaisuuden toteuttamisessa jokapäiväisissä käytännöissä.
- Tutustuttaa oppijat osallistuvan demokratian ja päätöksenteon käsitteisiin, jotka ovat Euroopan kansalaisten merkittävimpiä välineitä tehdä aloitteita ja ehdottaa lainsäädäntöä heidän elämäänsä vaikuttavissa politiikoissa.
- Korostetaan koulutuksen roolia aktiivisessa kansalaisuudessa.

Aktiivisella Euroopan kansalaisuudella tarkoitetaan yksilöiden osallistumista Euroopan unionin (EU) kansalaistoimintaan ja demokraattiseen elämään sekä kansallisella että Euroopan tasolla.
