Rivalry In North America

The French and English have been rivals for a long time. Both countries claimed land in the Ohio River Valley for fur trading. Their competition for land became so big that eventually it led to the French and Indian War.

Turning POINT

William Pitt sent Britain's best generals to North America

The British win the Battle of Quebec, making it difficult for the French to supply their troops in other forts.

Most of the fighting in North America ended by 1759.

FiRst ConTINENTAL CONGRESS..

At the Congress they did three things: 1. The colonists would not trade with the British until Boston Harbor was reopened. 2. They created a militia, known as the minutemen. 3. They agreed to meet again if necessary.

Colonists met at the First Continental Congress after the Intolerable Acts

Lexington and ConcORD (The SHot Heard 'Round the World)

  • The British were going to Concord to seize Patriot weapons.
  • Paul Revere warns the colonists.
  • The British reach Lexington, where the Minutemen are waiting.
  • The Minutement are told to leave and they refuse.
  • Shots are fired. Within minutes 8 Minutemen are dead.
  • The British continue to Concord but the Minutemen are able to protect the arsenal.

Britain gained control of Canada and land east of the Mississippi River

The land west of the Mississippi River went to Spain.

  • The only land France was left with in the New World was Haiti.
