Question 1/5

In 2025, a study compared sexual health questions answered by nurses at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre phone line, versus the answers given by three chatbots. ChatGPT was only accurate 64.8% of the time, which was the worst of the three chatbots they tested. However, all AI chatbots in the study generated incorrect information. The sexual health nurses provided answers with 99% accuracy.

Question 2/5

Information you share with AI chatbots is not guaranteed to be confidential or private. That data, including personal health information (like STI symptoms or the date of your last period), is saved on their servers. It could be used to train future bots, shared with other users, used to create a profile about you for targeted advertising, or even be sold to outside companies. Privacy, consent, and making choices for yourself are key components of sexual health and healthcare. The bottom line for AI companies is always money—not privacy.

Question 3/5

Finding information so you can make decisions about your health can be tricky. Whether you’re down a Wikipedia rabbit hole or scrolling on TikTok or Instagram, it can help to zoom out and think about not just the content itself, but also the why and how something got made. Thinking critically about all media is more important than ever, including when it comes to sexual health. If you’re not sure about a resource or a piece of info, try checking in with a trusted sexual health resource, like Action Canada’s Sexual Health Hub, your nearest sexual health clinic or resource centre, or even your local library.

Question 4/5

CSE gives young people accurate, age-appropriate information about sexuality and their sexual and reproductive health, which is critical for their health and survival. These programs should be based on an established curriculum; scientifically accurate; tailored for different grades; and comprehensive, meaning they cover a range of topics on sexuality and sexual and reproductive health, throughout childhood and adolescence.

This would include STIs and pregnancy, but also topics like families and relationships, consent and bodily autonomy, anatomy, puberty, menstruation, contraception, gender, and sexuality. These lessons help set students up for success in every area of their lives. This kind of education is not replicated just by putting prompts into a chatbot!

While many students and teachers may use AI chatbots to help answer sexual health questions, AI can’t actually replace what can be learned from educators who are trained to deliver comprehensive sexuality education (CSE).

Question 5/5

You can try to prevent your child or students from using AI chatbots by setting up parental controls or limiting access to the internet on their devices. But it is getting harder and harder to know when and where AI chatbots are being integrated into technology we use every day.

By talking openly about these things and asking questions you can create healthy relationships with technology, and help everyone develop the skills to navigate sexual health and sexuality with safety and curiosity.

It’s important to talk to kids early and honestly about what chatbots are and how they work. AI is now a real part of growing up with the internet, just like social media, pornography, and sexting.

Tip!

Not all chatbots are created equal. Even if you use something like Roo, the AI chatbot created by Planned Parenthood USA, specifically designed to give sexual health information, it’s a good idea to always double-check what it tells you. Try to find other sources online, talk to friends, or check with medical professionals to make sure what you’re learning is accurate before making a decision about your health.

Misinformation

Misinformation is information that is incorrect or misleading. This can be things like an out-of-date resource, a rumour you hear from a friend, or data that’s copied incorrectly. Misinformation is usually not done on purpose; when something is created to intentionally mislead people, that is called Disinformation. Because people have a lot of feelings about sexual health and sexuality, it can be a topic where there’s a lot of mis- and disinformation to look out for.

Sexual Health

Sexual health is an important part of overall health and quality of life. It is a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to reproduction and sexuality. It goes beyond pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections – sexual health includes things like how we feel about our bodies, consent, relationships, pleasure, who we’re attracted to, and more!

Generative AI

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that produces text, images, videos, and other forms of data. This includes Chatbots which are trained to have human-like conversations when we give it prompts. Some examples of these are ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Meta AI, and many more.
