Vietnam Education: • BFA, San José State University (2002) • MFA, Stanford University Technique / medium: • Chlorophyll prints (he “prints” photographic images into leaves using photosynthesis, then often preserves them in resin) • Later: daguerreotypes and landscape-based photo work, often about war, memory, immigration, and U.S. national parks

Born in 1960, Vietnam Education: • BA in Biology, Stanford University, 1981 • MA in Biology, Stanford University, 1985 • MFA in Photography, Yale School of Art, 1993 Technique / medium: • Large-format, mostly black-and-white photography • Carefully staged or observational projects about war, military training, reenactments, and landscape (series like Viêt Nam, Small Wars, 29 Palms, Events Ashore). • She often photographs the performance or preparation of war instead of combat itself.

Hiroshi Sugimoto

Born on February 23rd, 1948. Japan Education: • BA in Politics & Sociology, Rikkyo (St. Paul’s) University, Tokyo, 1970 • BFA in Photography, ArtCenter College of Design, Los Angeles, 1974. Technique / medium: • Extremely precise, concept-driven large-format photography, almost always black-and-white • Key series: Dioramas, Theatres (long exposures in movie theaters), Seascapes, Architecture, Lightning Fields, later Opticks. • Known for long exposures, perfect sharpness, and an interest in time, memory, prehistory, and perception. .

SARAH MARINO

Born (couldn’t find any date). United States Education: • Master’s in public administration Technique / medium: • Nature / landscape photography, but especially “quieter” or intimate landscapes, small scenes, abstracts, plant portraits, B&W and color • Shoots real scenes (she explicitly says no AI, no composites) and uses Lightroom / Photoshop lightly; emphasizes knowing the ecology of a place.
