WHAT DOES Multilingualism MEAN?

Copyright © 2025 Multilingual Promise. All rights reserved.

All Children Are Language Learners

Every classroom includes children who are learning language in different ways and at different rates. Two main types of language learners:
  • Monolinguals: Grow up with one language and one system of learning.
  • Multilinguals: Grow up with two or more languages and move fluidly between them.

TWO PATHS TO MULTILINGUALISM

Use different screen type maybe - or at least change flowy icons a bit.

TWO PATHS TO MULTILINGUALISM

When talking about kids who learn more than one language, you might hear a few different terms.
  • Emergent Bilingual
  • English Learner (EL)
  • Dual Language Learner (DLL)

The Meaning of “Home Language”

Use different screen type maybe. Too much copy here.

A home language is the language of the heart, the language used with family, grandparents, and community It includes many forms and varieties such as:
  • Black English Vernacular
  • Appalachian English
  • English
  • Creole
  • Indigenous languages (e.g., Mixteco, Triqui)
  • Chinese dialects
  • The many Spanishes (e.g., Castellano, Spanglish)
Each language has its own rules, expressions, and deep cultural meaning. Every language reflects unique ways of thinking, relating, and understanding the world. .

WHY EVERY LANGUAGE BELONGS IN THE CLASSROOM

All children—monolingual, simultaneous multilingual, and sequential multilingual—benefit when their home languages are recognized and valued.

The Core Message

When educators value and use children’s home languages, it’s something children see, hear, and feel every day. It tells them: Your language matters. Your family matters. You belong here. This message isn’t just spoken, it’s lived through daily interactions, stories, songs, and relationships that honor who children are and where they come from.

April - additional facts that you can choose from about multilingualism in the US can be found here - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XHHCrGknbpwHnaF61isXQlsRzglGciXUjz6tfi6OzEc/edit?tab=t.0

DID YOU KNOW?

I would add more facts ;) are there any that are impactful or shocking? - These are all the facts that Carola included in the design doc.

Please change the feedback/error message - we always want to be kind with users.. a buzzer doesn't feel appropriate. - Please note that I can't change this. It is built in.

FILL THE NUMBERS

There is scrolling which is not always user friendly, maybe split the screen in two and have one paragraph on each half.

Building Early Literacy Through Two Languages

When children notice sounds, patterns, and words across languages, they strengthen early literacy faster. This skill — metalinguistic awareness — helps them:
  • Hear language differences clearly
  • Read with confidence
  • Connect meaning across words and stories

INTRODUCTION - MAIN SCREEN (CLASSROOM HUB)

Hi! I'm Tina. Soy Tina. Welcome to my classroom. We have tres new students today, and I can’t wait for you to meet them.

Every child brings a unique language journey to our classroom.

READY FOR DESIGN: Update with the right template slide.

This is Javier. Let's learn about his language journey.

READY FOR DESIGN: Update with the right template slide.

JAVIER SCENE 1 - AT HOME

At home, Javier speaks only Spanish with his mamá and papá.

April - let's decide if we want to have the teacher narrate to make the transitions, or not. So she would say, "Before joining my classroom, Javier only heard English in places like the grocery store or doctor's office."

JAVIER SCENE 2 - COMMUNITY

READY FOR DESIGN: Update with the right template slide.

The only times Javier heard English before school were at the supermarket or the doctor’s office. He mostly just listened.

READY FOR DESIGN: Update with the right template slide.

JAVIER SCENE 3 - AT PRESCHOOL

April - the text bubbles should reflect how the teacher might greet him because he's standing by the door. So she might say, "Hola Javier! Mi llamo Tina. What is your name?"

Now Javier is in preschool. His teacher speaks English, and he’s learning new words every day. It feels new to him, but he is excited.

READY FOR DESIGN: Update with the right template slide.

NADINE SCENE 1 - AT HOME

At home, Nadine and her family speak Haitian Creole. That is their family language.

READY FOR DESIGN: Update with the right template slide.

NADINE SCENE 2 - COMMUNITY

In her community, Nadine hears Spanish and English from other children. But she doesn’t hear Haitian Creole.

READY FOR DESIGN: Update with the right template slide.

NADINE SCENE 3 - AT SCHOOL

At school, Nadine’s teacher speaks English and has learned some Spanish. She even labels items in English and Spanish, but never in Haitian Creole.

READY FOR DESIGN: Update with the right template slide.

This is Maria. Her story is a little different.

READY FOR DESIGN: Update with the right template slide.

MARIA SCENE 1 - WITH DAD

Maria’s dad always talks to her in Spanish, helping her keep their family language strong.

READY FOR DESIGN: Update with the right template slide.

MARIA SCENE 2 - WITH MOM

Maria’s mom only speaks English, so she always uses English with Maria.

READY FOR DESIGN: Update with the right template slide.

MARIA SCENE 2 - WITH MOM

When her mom and dad talk to each other, they use English. So every day, Maria hears both English and Spanish.

READY FOR DESIGN: Update with the right template slide.

April - let's do an open ended response here.

CLOSING REFLECTION

Every child’s language journey is unique, shaped by their home, community, and experiences. Let’s take a moment to reflect on your own language journeys, and what they mean for your teaching practice.

REFLECTION

REFLECTION

Also, maybe ask erin, but it feels like the reflection would go smoother without using a question per reflection screen. consider having all the questions on one screen or on one half of the screen and space to document the answers on a reflection question on the next slide or on the other half... would feel more flowy... I feel like breaking up the questions makes the reflection less reflective jajajaja thoughts? - It was designed this way because this is a prompt reflecting (as noted in the design document) so there's branching incuded. This is what I have in mind to show the branching concepts - however, if there's a more effective way we can update it.

Global for reflection screen types. update the title (or leave if it's intentional) and update instructions inside the answer box to match the question.

BEYOND ACCESS: EFFECTIVE PARTICIPATION

Full access gets children in the room — but effective participation keeps them engaged. Flip the card ⮎ button to see what active learning looks like.

Children make connections and process ideas, not just receive information.

Children build understanding together — learning becomes a shared experience.

Children share what they know, use new words, and learn through conversation.

Children show curiosity by wondering, exploring, and seeking clarification.

Understand that children learn new words best when they connect them to real experiences.

Recognize that concept knowledge comes before word knowledge—children must grasp the idea first.

Use visuals, actions, and objects so children can see, touch, and understand before naming.

Support children in building meaning across languages, not just memorizing words.

Remember that language learning is about making sense, not just saying words.

THE BENEFITS OF MULTILINGUALISM

Module 4

Copyright © 2025 Multilingual Promise. All rights reserved.

David - please minimize the copyright. Otherwise, this is approved.Done!

Cognitive Benefits

Children who use more than one language strengthen their brains. Switching between languages builds:
  • Memory – remembering words and ideas
  • Focus – paying attention and shifting between tasks
  • Flexible thinking – solving problems in new ways
These skills support learning, problem-solving, and self-control every day.

Copyright © 2025 Multilingual Promise. All rights reserved.

David - please minimize the copyright. Otherwise, this is approved.Done!

Social & Emotional Benefits

Using more than one language helps children connect with others. They learn to understand and appreciate different people and cultures. When their home language is valued, children feel:
  • Proud of who they are
  • Confident in what they can do
  • A sense of belonging at school and home

Copyright © 2025 Multilingual Promise. All rights reserved.

David - please minimize the copyright. Otherwise, this is approved.Done!

Educational Benefits

Children who develop two languages often match or exceed their peers in school. Skills from one language transfer to another, supporting:
  • Early literacy and storytelling
  • Math and science thinking
  • Reading and comprehension
Learning in two languages helps children see how sounds and words work, strengthening reading and overall learning.

Hearing and understanding families’ stories helps educators build trust and respond with empathy. When we listen first, we can share accurate, reassuring information about how children truly benefit from learning—and building strong skills—in both languages.

Supporting Tribal Languages in Early Childhood Programs

The most important principle: Indigenous families and communities guide how their languages are taught. Your role as an educator is to support and follow their direction, not to lead. Each tribal community determines how their values, beliefs, and language are incorporated into programming.

Your Role as an Educator

  • Listen first: Ask families how they want their language included.
  • Support, don’t direct: Tribal communities shape their own education.
  • Embrace cultural methods: Learning may look different from mainstream classrooms.
  • Think long-term: You’re helping preserve languages and strengthen future leaders.

Then and Now: Supporting All Languages

In the past, some laws discouraged children from using their home languages in school. Today, educators recognize that keeping and developing home languages alongside English strengthens learning, confidence, and long-term success.

David - please minimize the copyright. Done! There isn't enough space between the headline and the blue box and that spacing should be even with the top of the slide. The black on blue is harder to read. Let's make this a lighter background so the eye doesn't have to work to hard to get the content. I merged this 2 feedback and resolved with a light color, giving more space. I'm assuming this is a recap / review slide at the end of a lesson? Flexible Thinking

Multilingual children find new ways to solve problems and see different points of view.

Cognitive Growth

Bilingualism builds memory, focus, and flexible thinking that support learning across subjects.

Working Memory & Self-Control

Children practice remembering words, waiting their turn, and following steps — all parts of self-control.

Exposure and Use

The more chances children have to hear and use each language, the stronger their skills grow.

Add Movement

Use touch and motion to build meaning. Stroke grass → “soft” Tug twig → “strong”

Family and Community Attitudes

When languages are valued at home and in the community, children feel proud to use them.

Confidence and Identity

Using both languages helps children feel proud, capable, and connected to who they are.

Sequential Multilinguals

Children who learn one language first (often at home) and another is added later (typically in preschool or school).

Model language naturally and intentionally

Model new words and sentence structures naturally in both languages.

Echo & Expand

Name in home language + English.“Yes, rama! In English, twig." “Rama and twig — both mean the same thing.”

Simultaneous Multilinguals

Children who hear and are spoken to in two or more languages from birth, developing both languages side by side.

Brain Development

Most brain growth happens in the first five years — the critical window for language learning.

Practice Together

Say and do it together.“This is grass.” (stroke) “This is zacate.” (stroke)

Build understanding through two languages

Talk about the story in both languages.“What happened first?” “Why do you think the bear was sad?”

Child’s Interests and Motivation

Curiosity, personality, and joy in communication all affect how quickly children use both languages.

Language Preservation

Many Native languages are spoken in one village and may have no written form.

Community Strength

Children who speak their heritage language connect with elders and carry it forward.

Community and Policy Support

Local programs and school practices influence whether children continue using both languages.

Task Switching

Moving between languages builds mental flexibility. Offer open-ended or choice-based activities to mirror this.

Help children make language connections

Help children compare how words sound and work across languages.

Home Language Power

Early support for the home language strengthens all future learning.

Attention Control

Using two languages helps children focus and shift attention — during circle time, routines, or transitions.

Show & Connect

Connect the object to its meaning. Hold a twig and point to the picture. "What do you call this at home?" Child says: “rama.”

Early Learning Advantage

Children who learn in more than one language match or exceed English-only learners over time.

Cultural Continuity

Language is “a gift passed from elders to children.”

Success and Achievement

Bilingual children develop strong English skills while gaining tools for lifelong learning.

Invite children to use new language skills

Encourage children to answer using new words and longer sentences.

Learning Boost

Bilingual experience fuels success in math, science, and storytelling.
