FORMS OF ENERGY Energy has the ability to change from one for to another. This is one of energy's most important properties. There are FIVE main forms of energy used to do work: 1. Mechanical: The total kinetic and potential energy of a system. (Example: Waterwheel) 2. Chemical: In chemical reactions, bonds between atoms are broken and/or formed. The forming and breaking of these bonds generates chemical energy. (Example: Food Preparation & Digestion) 3. Electrical: Electrical energy which is produced by the movement of electrons. (Example: Blender) 4. Nuclear: Result of splitting or combining atoms of certain elements, which then give off radiation. This radiation may be used directly for food preservation (irradiation). 5. Radiant: Energy transmitted in the form of waves through space or some medium. (Example: Microwave Ovens) *Appliances can convert electrical energy into other forms of energy. Toasters and ranges can convert it into heat which is another form of radiant energy. Blenders, can openers and electric mixers convert electrical energy back into mechanical energy that can perform work.
