-BERGEN: it was founded around the year 1070 ac. The name Bjørgvin (bergen) means `green meadows among the mountains´. During the Middle Ages it was Norway´s capital until the 13th century when Oslo took control. Today Bergen is known as the ´Gateway to the fjords´, of course because of its breathtaking fjords. REYKJAVIK: it was founded around the year 874 ac, when it is said the first viking (Ingólfur Arnarson) set a permanent home there. It´s name, Reykjavik means ´bay of smoke´ because of the steam rising from its famous geothermal activity. It oficially become Iceland´s capital in 1944 when it gained full independence from denmark but it had been its political and administrative center since 1845.
