WARNING
This course provides an introduction to the principles and regulations regarding work on a worker lifting platform.
A competent person should identify, assess, and control hazards and adequately inform the operator on how to perform lifting tasks safely on the worksite using a lifting device. Similarly, all individuals should receive additional training before using specific lifting accessories, strictly following the manufacturer’s instructions and safe work practices. Additional training should be provided by the person responsible for assessing specific hazards at the worksite.
What is a lifting device?
Lifting devices can be a simple platform equipped with a guardrail (similar to scaffolding). Some models may be equipped with straight leveling cylinders (stabilizers). The lifting capacity is generally limited (e.g., 500 lbs).
Types of personnel lifting equipment
Require operator training
All-terrain telescopic mast forklifts
Converted forklift into lifting equipment...
A platform added to a telescopic boom lift allows workers to be elevated. This type of platform offers a higher capacity.
CAUSES OF ACCIDENTS
More often than not, the accident is caused:
- due to improper use of the operator.
- due to modification of the equipment without the manufacturer's consent.
- due to operator unfamiliarity.
- due to misunderstanding the machine's limits.
- due to lack of environmental assessment.
CAUSES OF ACCIDENTS
Without necessarily holding an operator qualification, the passenger or occupant should still have sufficient knowledge to assess the safety of the platform on which they will be seated alongside the operator.
