Nudging

How can you get motorists to respect the speed limit? The preferred method is often radars, but in 2010 Stockholm in Sweden tested a speed camera with a difference. It took photos not only of cars that drove too fast, but of every car that passed. Those who respected the limit then had the chance to win money in the 'Speed Camera Lottery'.

During the three-day trial, average speeds went down from 32 to 25 km/h. The Speed Camera Lottery is an example of a 'nudge' - a way of changing people's behaviour without forcing them. People usually know what the right action to take is, but they sometimes need a little push. Nudging is often more successful than making rules or imposing punishments.

  • Keep the message simple.
  • Make it fun.
  • Make it visual.
  • Create a spirit of competition.
  • Reward good results.
  • Make people feel good about the results of their action.
