Module 4 Reflection
How do lesson planning and assessment support 21st century learning?
Effective lesson planning ensures that learning experiences are purposeful, engaging, and connected to real-world contexts. It encourages collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity. Through intentional design, teachers can differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and promote student agency and inquiry. (Culminating Project) Assessment provides ongoing feedback that guides both teaching and learning. Assessments help teachers adapt lesson plans and help students develop metacognitive functions.(ELA/ELD Framework Chapter 8)
In your planning, how will you “sustain the ways [students’] cultures and languages are alive, in movement, and flowing” (San Pedro, 2017, p. 102)
I will sustain culture and language by creating a classroom environment that honors and integrates their lived experiences, languages, and identities into daily learning. This means designing lessons that connect academic content to students’ cultural backgrounds and community knowledge, allowing them to see themselves reflected in what they learn (CRT) I will use culturally and linguistically responsive teaching strategies, such as encouraging students to share stories, traditions, and perspectives that inform their understanding of the world. Multilingualism will be viewed as an asset—students will be invited to use their home languages.
What role does structure play in curriculum tasks?
Structure ensures alignment between objectives, instruction, and assessment, making lessons more coherent and purposeful. For students, it provides predictability and support, which fosters confidence and engagement. (J. Gunner)
How are you considering creating more learning situations which will allow for more interpersonal interactions; teacher-student and student-students interactions?
Teachers facilitate learning by questioning, guiding, and supporting, while students engage, respond, and take ownership of their progress. This exchange builds a community of trust and shared responsibility for learning. Literacy and communication are central to all learning situations. They enable students to express ideas, engage with content, and collaborate effectively. When literacy is integrated across subjects, students strengthen comprehension and critical thinking skills
Strategies such as think-pair-share, small group projects, peer feedback, and class discussions foster collaboration and communication, making learning more social and dynamic. (ELA/ELD Framework). Students learn best through active participation, meaningful connections, and opportunities to construct understanding through experience. Teachers teach by designing purposeful, scaffolded experiences that guide students toward mastery. Effective teaching balances direct instruction with opportunities for exploration, feedback, and reflection. (Guillaume)
