What is the present continuous
The present continuos is an important verb tense shows actions that are happening righ now or around the present time. It is also to talk about future plans that are alredy organized and confirmed. The basic formula is simple: to be (am/is/are)+ verb + ing .
affirmative form
Structure subject + am/is/are + verb + ing Golden rule The verd "to be" must agree with the subject Clear examples: I am studying (Yo estoy estudiando) She is talking (Ella esta hablando) They are playing (Ellos están jugando) .
Negative form
Basic structure:subject + am/is/are + not + verb + ing common contractions: isn´t / aren´t / i´m not practical examples I ´m not studying ( yo no estoy estudiando ) He isn´t working (el no esta trabajando ) We aren´t going (nosotros no estamos yendo)
Interrogative form
Structure:Am/is/are + subject + verb ing ? Examples: Are you listening ? (¿Estás escuchando?) Is she coming?(¿Ella viene?) Are they playing? (¿Están ellos jugando?)
Step 1:Change the order- put am/is/are at the beginning Step 2: Then add the subject Step 3: Finally, add the verb + ing + ?
Short answers yes,I am / no, i´m not yes, she is/ no,she isn´t yes,they are/ no, they aren´t
functions of the presen continuous
future plans It expresses plans that are already deciden and organized for the near future Example We are meeting tomorrow
Temporary action it shows situations that are in progress for a period of time Example: I am working on a project this week
Repetitive emphasis used with "always" for repeated actions that are annoying Example: He is always complaining
Immediate action It describes what is happening right now Example: she is reading a book
