SOLs Replace Final Exams

For middle and high school students, SOL tests will now count as their final exam grade instead of generating a separate score out of 600. This change makes SOL performance directly impact student grades rather than serving as a standalone assessment.

Compressed testing window

All SOL tests must now be administered during the last two weeks of school, creating a tighter timeline for instruction and preparation. Teachers will have less time to review material before testing begins, requiring students to retain knowledge throughout the entire school year.

Higher Passing Requirements

The percentage of questions students must answer correctly to pass is rising from approximately 60% to 80%. According to FCPS projections, 26% of students who passed math SOLs in Spring 2025 would fail under the new standards, and Langley's geometry pass rate would drop from 97% to 50%.

New 100-Point Scoring System

Virginia will replace the current 600-point SOL scale with a simpler 100-point system starting next school year in an effort to make score interpretations more trivial. However, the passing threshold will be significantly higher. A current passing score of 400 would need to be 479 in reading and 446 in math under the new scale.
