Anna Slack Crowned NE Homecoming Queen

By Edna Freeman

New Site’s Anna Marie Slack, daughter of Kristie and Scott Slack, was recently crowned Northeast Mississippi Community College’s 2025 Homecoming Queen, an accomplishment that she describes as both overwhelming and deeply meaningful. Escorted by Levi Lovelace, Anna represented her peers with dignity, humility, and a genuine appreciation for the community that shaped her.

News Staff

Currently majoring in biological science and pre-dental, Anna embodies the spirit of academic excellence, leadership, and service that Northeast strives to cultivate among its students. For her, being crowned represented not just a recognition of her presence on campus but a reflection of the relationships, friendships, and support she has formed since coming here. “I felt overwhelmed with honor and so loved by each and every classmate that voted for me,” she said with a sincerity. “I felt a lot of love. I'm so grateful that I chose the path of going to Northeast after high school.” Anna has made an lasting impression at Northeast through her involvement in campus organizations and student life. As president of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), she leads one of the college’s most distinguished honor organizations, promoting academic achievement, scholarship, and leadership development among her peers. Beyond PTK she is dedicated to helping others, supporting the Baptist Student Union (BSU) and various Christian organizations on campus. When asked how other students can become more active in campus life, Anna emphasized the importance of involvement and utilizing the many opportunities that Northeast offers. “Students could participate in Phi Theta Kappa, BSU, or any Christian institute on campus,” she advised. “Also, go to the events that Mrs. Emily Bell and Mrs. Charlotte Tennison send out. To meet new people, go to campus events.”

Homecoming Recap

By Maggie McElhaney

What a start to fall weather it has been for the Tigers this month! Homecoming was celebrated on October 16th. The day began with a presentation of our lovely Homecoming Court, led by Queen Anna Slack. Following, several events were hosted for our respected alumni. NEMCC welcomed back some friendly faces with a reunion, as well as some familiar names into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame.

Her encouragement reflects the broader mission of Northeast Mississippi Community College- to create an environment where students grow academically, socially, and personally. Through participation in organizations and events, students not only grow their social circles but also develop leadership skills and a sense of community that last long after graduation. Anna’s role as Homecoming Queen is more than ceremonial; it is a reflection to her character, her compassion, and her impact on those around her. Her classmate's decision to crown her is a collective appreciation of her kindness, positivity, and consistent involvement on campus.

Crafting with Vinyl

By Ava Campbell

Tiffany Middleton organized a faculty fall vinyl workshop for the employees and staff on Monday, October 20. This was a wonderful opportunity for staff members to unwind from their daily routine and communicate with each other. For the employees who signed up for this event, they had a chance to decorate varieties of items, including plates, picture frames and blocks using the vinyl vibes makerspace in the library's innovation zone. This hands-on activity allowed our staff to express their creativity and personality by personalizing their design to their liking. The workshop was a success with all the staff members expressing their enjoyment.

The libraries innovation zone provided a creative environment for the workshop. This event was not only a break from work, but also an opportunity to foster a sense of communication and belonging among employees.

Exploring Your Campus Eats

Story and Photos by Angelicia Akins

At Northeast, students have several great options when it comes to finding something to eat between classes. Whether you are in the mood for a full meal, a quick bite, or just a coffee before your next lecture, there is a place on campus to satisfy every craving, all with friendly staff who make you feel right at home. The main Cafeteria, located in the Frank and Audrey Haney Student Union, serves as the heart of campus dining. It offers all-you-care-to-eat meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner throughout the week. Breakfast is served from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, the cafeteria closes after lunch, and on

Sundays, students can enjoy lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Prices are affordable, with breakfast costing $7.82, and lunch and dinner priced at $8.45 each. The cafeteria also offers a Sunday brunch for families and guests, with prices set at $14.40 for adults and $11.32 for children, and kids four and under eat free. Booneville is buzzing with local talent and entrepreneurial spirit. These hometown businesses are bringing unique energy and personality to the community, proving that small-town dreams can shine just as bright as big-city ventures.

Booneville Business Recommendations

By Marley Beth Moss

If you're looking for something to help kick-start your day or even a midday pickup, the best place to go is the Goodlyfe. You can get a wide variety of things here at these local shops, from loaded teas, dirty sodas, apple nachos, and lots more. Also, it's not a franchise; there is one other store located in Corinth, MS, which is always an important thing to shop small and local to your town.

Another amazing place to visit in Boonville is the Silly Sisters. This is the first place you need to go if you need some retail therapy. They have everything from boutique clothing to self-printed t-shirts to hair accessories. They carry a little bit of everything you could ever need or want. This is also another local store in Boonville that I couldn’t recommend more to visit.

Nobody wants to go to the doctor, but there are times when you have to, and Urgent Care of Booneville's family friendly office makes it one of the best places to go. The office is filled with several registered nurses and highly qualified nurse practitioners that are able to do everything to get you feeling better as soon as possible. This is a local business, so every employee is from around the area. This keeps the hospitality and charm of the South in the local store.

NE Student Serves in National 4-H Position

Story and Photos by Cherish Prater

Prentiss County native and graduate of New Site High School, Ethan McCreary, has made his family and community proud through his achievements and accomplishments within the 4-H Club, FFA and beyond. McCreary has been a long time member of the 4-H chapter and has been awarded several prestigious awards throughout his journey. Most recently, in early October 2025, during a trip to Baltimore, Maryland for the National Junior Horticulture Association convention, McCreary was selected as National Eastern Director for the National Horticulture Association. While there, he and others from the Lee County 4-H chapter were recognized and awarded different distinguished leadership roles for their hard work and dedication to serving within the chapter. In a recent interview, McCreary gave a tour of the many animals on his propery and shared a personal struggle of growing up with a speech impediment and how he has worked incredibly hard to overcome it. He made up his mind early on that he would not let anything, including his speech impediment or financial difficulties, get in the way of his goals. He stated that all he has achieved can be contributed to his mother and number one supporter, Joyce Mccreary. When asked how he became a part of the 4-H community, McCreary laughed and said jokingly “well my big brother started doing it first and got hooked on it, and I just followed in his footsteps.’” Around the age of 15 or 16, he realized this was his passion and calling because of the encouragement from others who saw his accomplishments and expressed their belief that he would make a great ag agent or ag teacher due to his vast knowledge gained through his experiences within the FFA and 4-H communities. When asked what sets him apart, he humbly stated “just my experiences and achievements, I’ve been to nationals in horticulture, cattle judging, I’ve given speeches on those topics in those settings.” McCreary said his experiences within the 4-H community and this latest recognition has made him feel more confident and given him the opportunity to make a difference. “I feel like I can still continue to make a difference,” he stated, and he encourages the younger generation to take part in 4-H, in one of their many educational paths, and says “don’t let anything hold you back, not a personal difficulty or financial issues, there is always money out there, you just have to find it. Just go out there, do it, and enjoy it. You’ll be glad you did.”

Beyond the Classroom: Fancy Faces by Hannah

By Nellie Kate Johnson

By day, she’s solving equations and explaining the mysteries of algebra to students here at Northeast Mississippi Community College. By night, and often on weekends, she’s blending foundations, curling hair, and perfecting curated looks for each of her beautiful clients. At the center of it all is Hannah Hastings, a talented hair and makeup artist whose name has become synonymous with elegance and excellence across North Mississippi. Hastings has spent years cultivating Fancy Faces, a business that embodies confidence, individuality, and self-expression. With her steady hand, meticulous eye for detail, and approachable warmth, she has turned it into one of the most sought-after beauty services in our region. Her passion for hair and makeup ignited at an early age. Ms. Hannah recalls that even around eight years old, she was the child “fixing everyone’s hair and dressing up my friends,” a playful prelude to the artistry she now practices professionally. The name Fancy Faces emerged organically from her personality and style. “ ‘Girl, you look so fancy!’ is something I caught myself saying all the time after styling my clients,” she said with a laugh, “and it just felt right to make it a part of my brand.” What distinguishes Fancy Faces is Hastings’ ability to fuse technical skill with a deep personal touch. Each look, whether for a bride on her wedding day or a simple look for senior pictures, is thoughtfully crafted to enhance the client’s natural beauty. “My goal is always to help people feel like the best version of themselves,” Hannah explains. “Every client who sits in my chair should leave feeling gorgeous in her own skin, just the way the Lord made her.” Running a small business has not always been easy. Hastings acknowledges that one of the most important lessons she’s learned is that her style will not be for everyone. “I’ve discovered that not every look I do will be everyone’s cup of tea,” she said with a grin, “and that’s okay! The trick is finding the people who appreciate your work and focusing on making them feel extraordinary.” She adds that continually refining her craft through experimentation, practice, and even pulling inspiration from social media has been rewarding and credits her flourishing success to these key elements. Looking toward the future, Hannah is beaming with excitement and eager to expand Fancy Faces while also embracing a personal milestone: her own wedding! “I’ve been doing everyone else’s makeup for years, now it’s my turn to get fancy with my team,” she explained to me the joy behind having her assistants, who she has mentored, do her hair and makeup on such a special day. In a world where beauty trends come and go, Hannah Hastings and Fancy Faces stand apart for their timeless approach: one that celebrates individuals for who they are and reminds the community that true artistry begins with heart.

Short Plays Take the Stage

Story and Photos By Markaya Floyd

Under the direction of Christopher Schager, the NEMCC Theatre Department recently wrapped up their productions of the 2025 Fall Short Plays with great success and positive feedback. The shows offered a range of emotions from lighthearted humor to dramatic storytelling. The students involved took on a role both on stage and behind the scenes, showcasing their skills in acting, stage management, and design. Each play offered a different story to keep the audience engaged and on the edge of their seats for what’s to come next. The performances took place in Hines Hall and drew much enthusiasm and applause from the crowds of students, faculty, parents, and community members. With another successful performance season underway, the NEMCC Theatre Department continue to prove that creativity and collaboration are thriving on campus.

A New Creative Experience Among Us? Andreas Kostyal: Structures In Harmony

Story and Photos by Tevin Clark

The art exhibit in Anderson Hall now houses works from the Andrea Kostyal, an artist who grew up in a small town in Hungary, Ivándárda, and began art lessons at age 14 studying textiles. She then moved to the United States in the early 2000s and has been a resident of Hattiesburg, Mississippi since 2008. Kostyal’s paintings blend the energy of city life with that of nature. Drawing from memories of childhood, art studies in Hungary, and her travels, she transforms photographs of city streets into layered, surreal dreamlike scenes. Her use of grid-like patterns, inspired by woven textiles, creates rhythm while connecting architectural and natural elements. Playful, bubbly shapes drift across her canvases, capturing movement, emotion, and the joy she finds in everyday surroundings. To view this exhibit, vist the art gallery in Anderson Hall between the hours of 8:00-3:00 through November 20th.

Tigers Show Fighting Spirit in Turnaround Season

By Cooper Guerra

The Northeast Mississippi Community College football team has battled through a dramatic season, posting a 5-3 record highlighted by high-quality matchups and narrow finishes. The Tigers earned statement wins throughout the year, including a dominant 41-14 victory at Itawamba and a convincing homecoming rout of Coahoma. Despite those highs, Northeast faced adversity with a pair of gut-

wrenching losses to Northwest and East Mississippi, falling by a combined 10 points. Since those setbacks, the Tigers have responded in commanding fashion, outscoring their last two opponents 86-21. The offensive surge has been powered by the backfield duo of Jeremiah Harrell and Qua Middlebrooks, who have anchored a balanced and explosive attack. Defensively, Northeast has been one of the most aggressive units in the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC), recording a league-high 27 sacks. The Tigers’ defensive front and special teams play have been key components of the team’s success and identity this season. Northeast will close out its 2025 campaign at home on Oct. 30 against Copiah-Lincoln Community College, aiming to cap its season with another strong performance in front of the Booneville crowd.

Ghostly Good Reads For This Chilling October

By Ella Shamblin

There's some new books in town and they are definitely here to stay! Halloween is around the corner and if you are wanting a spooky read to wrap up this month, you're in luck! Step into a haunted mansion with a twist or take a trip to the carnival with these two wondrously entertaining books!

★ How to Survive a Horror Story is a 2025 thriller about a group of authors invited to a legendary horror writers manor for his will reading. They are forced to play a deadly game where they must solve riddles to progress through the house, or face the manor's hunger. ★ This book felt equally like the board game clue, an escape room, and the movie Monster House. There were times where it got a bit predictable but it was not bad. The horror elements added a ton to the book and made it really intriguing to read. It was a little tropy but a very fun read to fall into this halloween season!

★ Freakslaw is a 2024 novel about a traveling carnival of queer outcasts who arrive in a repressed Scottish town in 1997, seeking revenge on the locals. The book is described as a blend of literary horror, queer fiction, and dark fantasy. The story explores themes of repression, and violence that can arise from a clash between outsiders and a small, conservative community. ★ This book is told through all the characters so the reader is very well accustomed to all. There is a fortune teller, strongman, ringmaster, wolfboy, witch, conjoined twins, and many other unique characters. The author really touches on many different themes such as, self discovery, acceptance, toxic masculinity, and personal freedom. This is an extremely memorable book and definitely worth a read if you like scary carnivals!

A Glimpse into the Dark: Reviews of Spooky Cinema

By Makalie Mize and Jaida Windham

Boo MadeaIf you are looking for a fun, hilarious Halloween movie, Boo Madea is a must- see. When the family faces some eerie and unexpected challenges, Madea steps in with her no-nonsense attitude. This movie is a mix of laughter and a bit of Halloween mischief. Tyler Perry portrays Madea's character perfectly in every film. The tough, sassy, and wise character really comes alive in this movie. It is not just about Halloween and scaring people, it is about forgiveness, second chances, and the importance of family. If you want a Halloween movie with an important meaning behind it, this is your movie. Rating 9/10

The MonkeyThe Monkey is a gripping thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The story follows a mysterious figure and the unsettling events that unfold around it. There is suspense and psychological twists. The atmosphere is tense and eerie, which makes it perfect for fans of dark, mind-bending movies. If you like gruesome, suspenseful movies, this one is for you. If you do not like gruesome movies but want another reason to watch it, Theo James is the main character. Rating 7/10

HalloweenTownHalloweenTown is a great children’s movie for the spooky vibe. Though it is a children’s movie it is great for all ages. I love this movie even now and I am an adult, my mom loves this movie, and my grandmother loves this movie. When fall comes around and better yet Halloween it will always be a classic that is on my watch list. Overall, I would recommend this movie to anyone because there is just no other like it. Rating 10/10

HalloweenThis is one of the top horror movies ever made, you may ask why I say that and it is because everyone knows of it or at least knows the main character in it, Michael Myers. It is a classic horror film based around the holiday (you guessed it) Halloween. In the original there is a little boy who murders his sister, and is sent to a mental asylum for 5 years then escapes, then he goes back to his hometown to find more victims... Horror movies rant for everyone, but if you like them this should definitely be up there on your watch list. Rating 8/10

Calling all the MonstersThe first time I heard this song was on a Disney channel commercial during Halloween time when all the Halloween episodes aired and if you feel the same way as me then this song is pure nostalgia for you too. This song is by China Ann McCain and was originally performed on a 2011 episode of A.N.T. Farm. If you are just looking for a snack, caffeine boost, or a study spot, the Campus Bookstore is home to a Starbucks café. Students can grab a coffee, latte, or cold drink while browsing for textbooks or school supplies, and there are plenty of cozy spots to sit and relax. The Starbucks staff are just as warm and inviting, often striking up conversations and creating a friendly environment where students can unwind or catch up with friends. Each of these dining spots...the Cafeteria, the Tiger Grill, and Starbucks, add something unique to campus life at Northeast. Pictures of students in line, chatting with staff, or enjoying meals together would help show how these spaces bring the community together. Whether you are grabbing a morning coffee, a hearty lunch, or dinner after class, Northeast makes sure there is always a welcoming place to eat and connect.

The evening continued with golden opportunities of fun during our tailgate festivities and game, where our band and cheerleaders preformed lights-out. The football team celebrated with a six-score win over Coahoma as the crowd all dressed in gold to support their tigers. Homecoming week was a great way to celebrate October and being a Tiger.

For Anna, this recognition stands as one of the most meaningful moments in her college experience. “A big thank you to every student that chose me to represent Northeast as their homecoming queen,” she expressed with sincerity. “This has been an unforgettable experience, and I’m incredibly thankful for the love and support from everyone.” Anna carries forward the knowledge, experiences, and connections she made at Northeast with her as she studies biological science and prepares for a future in the dental field. Her story inspires both current and future students- showing that leadership, gratitude, and active participation can lead to success and lifelong relationships. At Northeast Mississippi Community College, Anna Marie Slack’s name will be remembered not only as a Homecoming Queen but as a student whose kindness, ambition, and faith enriched the campus community and encouraged others to get active, give back, and strive for excellence.
