Powertech’s High Power Laboratory offers evaluation, verification, and certification testing of medium- and high-voltage products to support manufacturers, power utilities, and other users of electrical equipment. The lab specializes in testing for proper switching, withstand, and sensing of protection equipment during power flow transients.
The lab is the largest grid-connected short-circuit testing facility in North America and operates independently of utilities and manufacturers. It has controlled power level capabilities for short-duration single-phase tests up to 400 MVA and threephase tests up to 1,000 MVA.

The materials and polymers testing lab houses advanced thermal analysis, rheology, spectrometric, chromatographic, and mechanical testing instrumentation.Expertise is also available to evaluate and solve complex problems related to fuels, lubricants, and coolants.

Positive Sequence and Electromagnetic Transient Model Quality Test (MQT) per Regional Interconnection Requirements
The program calculates Condition Indexes for equipment components and accessories. These indexes are based on nameplate information, known problems, results of tests and inspections, operating and maintenance history, and years in service. IEEE, IEC, and other standards criteria (eg., Duval Triangle) are used in the assessment. Test and inspection information includes lab tests (DGA, oil quality, furans, and others), field tests (Doble, Megger, winding insulation), internet inspections (leads, windings), and external inspections (bushings, radiators). With this information, the software provides a rating of equipment health. The program allows experts to review and accept the ratings, provide diagnostics, and make recommendations on intervention.
The results can be used to develop a quick overview of equipment health and to make comparisons within a substation or the entire utility for asset management purposes. The software allows for easy compilation of various data, including historical and from on-line monitors, and helps utility engineers make quick and accurate decisions.

Extending Equipment Life
The Material Investigations department serves a wide range of industries, including electric utilities, automotive equipment manufacturers, oil and gas suppliers, welding companies, and material suppliers. Offerings include failure analysis, flaw tolerance and fitenss-for-service ("run/repair/replace") evaluation, coatings and corrosion inspections and testing, welding engineering, material selection, and a full suite of material characterization testing. For electric utilities, Powertech performs materials failure analysis of components in generation and T&D infrastructure. Every analysis completed at Powertech includes recommendations and suggestions for corrective measures.
Other utility-related materials investigations include corrosion analysis of metallic structures and mitigation through cathodic protection, inspection and testing of paints and coatings on metallic towers and lattice structures, and review and qualification of wleding procedures. With a deep knowledge of the industry and in-house non-destructive evaluation (NDE) lab services, the technical team can provide expert consultation to achieve best results. For the automotive industry, with the emergence of hydrogen fuel, Powertech works with designers, manufacturers, and certification bodies to ensure each material can be safely integrated into the system.

Powertech is ISO 17025 accredited for conductor stress and strain and creep testing. These services assist conductor manufacturers, and utilities model the conductor's mechanical properties with software such as PLS-CADD to ensure design requirements are met. Another important factor in the design of overhead transmission lines is the calculation of the sag and tension of the conductor. Ths calculation includes the measurement of the conductor creep, defined as the inelastic stretch, or permanent elongation, of the conductor material when subjected to stress. In addition to stress strain and creep tests, Powertech mechancial services offer other conductor testing including but not limited to: conductor condition assessment, mechanical tsting of conductor hardware, testing of individual wires, etc.

On-Line Oil Treatment
On-Line Oil Dehydration Unit - removes moisture and particulate matter from transformer oil.
On-Line Decontamination of Transformer Oil - uses extraction cartridges with proprietary absorbent technology to selectively remove contaminants and PCBs from the oil of in-service oil-filled equipment. The technology offers utilities the opportunity to significantly reduce the costs associated with contaminant removal and disposal.
On-Line Bucket Truck Hydraulic Dehydration Unit - restores the dielectric properties of the hydraulic oil in bucket trucks by removing moisture and particulate matter.
On-Line Oil Purification Unit- removes all oil and paper decomposition products (acids, polar components, furans, moisture, particulate matter, and corrosive sulphur) from transformer oil, cost-effectively restoring in-service oil quality to near new.
On-Line Load Tap Changer Oil Purification Unit - removes not only particulate matter and moisture from LTCs but also precursors to contact coking, and refurbishes in-service aged oil to the quality of new oil.

Powertech’s High Power Laboratory offers evaluation, verification, and certification testing of medium- and high-voltage products to support manufacturers, power utilities, and other users of electrical equipment. The lab specializes in testing for proper switching, withstand, and sensing of protection equipment during power flow transients.
The lab is the largest grid-connected short-circuit testing facility in North America and operates independently of utilities and manufacturers. It has controlled power level capabilities for short-duration single-phase tests up to 400 MVA and threephase tests up to 1,000 MVA.

Powertech conducts condition assessment tests in the field on inservice cables and accessories and in the lab on cables and accessories removed from service to prevent unscheduled outages and determine replacement priority. On-line tests include visual inspections, partial discharge tests, infrared imaging, and metallurgical tests. Among offline tests are AC withstand tests, tan delta, and partial discharge measurements. Laboratory tests include partial discharge tests, tan delta measurements, AC withstand/breakdown, hot and cold impulse/switching tests, and a variety of material and chemical tests.

Positive Sequence and Electromagnetic Transient Model Quality Test (MQT) per Regional Interconnection Requirements
The program calculates Condition Indexes for equipment components and accessories. These indexes are based on nameplate information, known problems, results of tests and inspections, operating and maintenance history, and years in service. IEEE, IEC, and other standards criteria (eg., Duval Triangle) are used in the assessment. Test and inspection information includes lab tests (DGA, oil quality, furans, and others), field tests (Doble, Megger, winding insulation), internet inspections (leads, windings), and external inspections (bushings, radiators). With this information, the software provides a rating of equipment health. The program allows experts to review and accept the ratings, provide diagnostics, and make recommendations on intervention.
The results can be used to develop a quick overview of equipment health and to make comparisons within a substation or the entire utility for asset management purposes. The software allows for easy compilation of various data, including historical and from on-line monitors, and helps utility engineers make quick and accurate decisions.

Extending Equipment Life
The Material Investigations department serves a wide range of industries, including electric utilities, automotive equipment manufacturers, oil and gas suppliers, welding companies, and material suppliers. Offerings include failure analysis, flaw tolerance and fitenss-for-service ("run/repair/replace") evaluation, coatings and corrosion inspections and testing, welding engineering, material selection, and a full suite of material characterization testing. For electric utilities, Powertech performs materials failure analysis of components in generation and T&D infrastructure. Every analysis completed at Powertech includes recommendations and suggestions for corrective measures.
Other utility-related materials investigations include corrosion analysis of metallic structures and mitigation through cathodic protection, inspection and testing of paints and coatings on metallic towers and lattice structures, and review and qualification of wleding procedures. With a deep knowledge of the industry and in-house non-destructive evaluation (NDE) lab services, the technical team can provide expert consultation to achieve best results. For the automotive industry, with the emergence of hydrogen fuel, Powertech works with designers, manufacturers, and certification bodies to ensure each material can be safely integrated into the system.
Powertech is ISO 17025 accredited for conductor stress and strain and creep testing. These services assist conductor manufacturers, and utilities model the conductor's mechanical properties with software such as PLS-CADD to ensure design requirements are met. Another important factor in the design of overhead transmission lines is the calculation of the sag and tension of the conductor. Ths calculation includes the measurement of the conductor creep, defined as the inelastic stretch, or permanent elongation, of the conductor material when subjected to stress. In addition to stress strain and creep tests, Powertech mechancial services offer other conductor testing including but not limited to: conductor condition assessment, mechanical tsting of conductor hardware, testing of individual wires, etc.

On-Line Oil Treatment
On-Line Oil Dehydration Unit - removes moisture and particulate matter from transformer oil.
On-Line Decontamination of Transformer Oil - uses extraction cartridges with proprietary absorbent technology to selectively remove contaminants and PCBs from the oil of in-service oil-filled equipment. The technology offers utilities the opportunity to significantly reduce the costs associated with contaminant removal and disposal.
On-Line Bucket Truck Hydraulic Dehydration Unit - restores the dielectric properties of the hydraulic oil in bucket trucks by removing moisture and particulate matter.
On-Line Oil Purification Unit- removes all oil and paper decomposition products (acids, polar components, furans, moisture, particulate matter, and corrosive sulphur) from transformer oil, cost-effectively restoring in-service oil quality to near new.
