Va ser el primer a descriure l’estructura d’un teixit viu. Tot i que les cèl·lules de suro eren mortes, va obrir la porta a entendre que els éssers vius estan formats per petites unitats.

Vivia a Holanda i era un comerciant curiós. No era científic professional, però fabricava els seus propis microscopis.

Descobriment

Va observar gotes d’aigua i va descobrir petits éssers vius que es movien. Els va anomenar animàculs (actualment, bacteris i protozous).

Importancia

Va ser el primer a veure cèl·lules vives i microorganismes. Va demostrar que hi ha vida invisible a simple vista.
