The Light in the Dark Town
A quiet breeze echoed through the dark streets of the silent town. A young girl called Isabel was walking through the darkness alone. She was full of unhappiness. The town was so dark, it was as if all light had been forgotten. The curling shapes of shadows crept around, like they were looking for something. The girl knew that each house was full of people, yet she felt so alone. Then with a hush of wind, the tiniest something landed on her hand. It was a Wisp!
The delicate, fizzing ball of light was twisting and turning and felt peculiar in her hands. It was trying to go somewhere so Isabel let it take her. Consequently, dark lanes were illuminated with the Wisp’s colours. The shadows became light as it fluttered elegantly. She followed the Wisp’s sparkling glow, chasing it through the streets.
It came to rest in front of a homeless man sleeping in darkness on a cold bench. He opened his grey eyes and sat up while the Wisp murmured something to him. Suddenly, a flood of light spread out. It filled the darkness around him with gentle laughter. He smiled with now brightening eyes as he relived a family memory from the past.
Isabel watched in disbelief as the Wisp danced onwards. This time it swirled through an empty, gloomy lane and landed in the hands of an exhausted woman. She was hiding and she was frightened. “It’s OK. It just wants to tell you something,” Isabel assured her. The woman lifted the Wisp to her ear with uncertainty. Then her face lit up as it whispered something. It poured out colours and music that filled the town’s pocket of darkness. The woman began to dance as she watched the sky fill with memories of her years as a ballerina. “Thank you,” breathed the grateful lady.
Soon afterwards, the Wisp did something else. Instead of flittering off, it gently settled into Isabel’s hands. Its colour brightened to become more vivid, banishing the darkness. In the light, she stared in wonder and saw her own town fill with colours. She watched those dark streets beginning to fill with crowds of now happy people. Her face grew into an expression of joy as she realised something. The Wisp hadn’t been showing her a memory. It was making her a promise of a brighter future. “One day,” it whispered to her.
