Context

This is a Byzantine Icon called The Triumph of Orthodoxy which was created after Iconoclasm ended in year 843 CE. This art piece reflects a period of time when religious art and icons gained its sacred authenticity under the rule of Empress Theodora and Patriach Methodios I. After years of endless debates the church came to an agreement that sought to declare that holy painting or icons can be respected without them being worshiped as gods or holy beings. Barber explains saying that this period marked a clear cutting or ties between art and worship, as icons were no longer seen as objects with divine power or presence but as sacred symbols that help spiritual reflection
