It shows the narrator's mom is dedicated to her child. She stopped law school to raise her.

The narrator is sharing when they moved into their apartment, it was dirty and it affected them, especially her mom.

From Chapter 4: The Speed Round "Mom cried the first time she saw our apartment. The whole place was filthy, she says. The wood floors were “practically black,” the windows were “caked with dirt,” and the walls were smeared with something she “didn’t even want to think about.”

It shows they don't really live in a nice home. This is a detail the narrator makes a point of sharing because it shows a deeper detail about their lives.

Things You Hide "Mom wanted to be a criminal defense lawyer—she started law school and almost finished her first year, but then I was born and she had to quit."

The narrator is sharing that her mother is dedicated, hardworking, and wants to win a game show. There must be more to come about this.
