In 1774, after the Boston Tea Party, the British government passed a series of strict laws to punish the American colonies. Colonists called these laws the Intolerable Acts. This virtual museum explores how these laws fueled anger throughout the colonies, brought people together in protest, and helped set the stage for the American Revolution. The Coercive Acts is the official name the British government gave to a set of laws passed in 1774. These laws were designed to punish the American colonies after the Boston Tea Party and to restore British authority. The Intolerable Acts is the name used by the American colonists. They called the laws intolerable because they believed the laws were unfair, violated their rights, and went too far.
