Hazard Identification
Hazard identification is the first step in risk assessment, which determines whether a stressor can lead to health outcomes. Example: Observing if cases of workers exposed to benzene was a rare type of leukimia.
Policy Cycle
The policy cycle is the framework that describes how policies are developed. Example: Youth tobacco control, went from understanding health risks to regulating youth smoking rates.
Decision Analysis
Decision analysis is an approach to making informed choices by evaluating options and outcomes. Example: Evaluating the effectiveness of mass vacinations campaigns.
Ethical Guidelines
Ethical guidelines are in place to ensure that the research is being done is beneficial to society. Example: MInimizing risks, protecting privacy, and maintaining public trust.
Exposure Assessment
The process of quantifying the magnitude, frequency, and duration of a population's contact with an exposure agent. Example: Assessing a community's exposure to lead in Flint's water.
Trans Fat
Trans fats are unsaturated fats that can be natural or artificially produced. Example: Artificial would be like baked goods, fried foods, and processed foods. Natural would be in milk and meats.
Core Functions
The core functions of public health include assessment, policy development, and assurance
Risk Assessment
A process in which a public health threat is determined. Using the relationship between exposure and adverse health outcomes. Example: measuring mercury exposure from fish consumption and cardiovascular disease.
