My life with covid-19
PRESENTATION
Jackeline Gomez
Hello, everyone! My name is Jackeline Gomez, but I rather be called Jackie. When someone calls me Jackeline, my name is usually not pronounced correctly, or I'm asked why my name is not spelled 'Jaqueline', so I just preffer Jackie.
before covid
I had this nasty cough and fever, that would just not go away, that started shortly after New Year's day. I was trying everything every over the counter medication and home remedy I came across of because I had my first vacation coming up in February.
Right before COVID was 'discovered' I was actually a medical assistant at an Orthopedic Hospital. Luckily, we didn't deal with any contagious or sickly patients, just with patients needing any sort of help with their bones.
I just assumed I had a cough that would not go away because it was winter time. So, I went ahead and set off to our Colorado vacation with my then 4 year old son! We had a blast and came back ready to spend some time at the Houston Rodeo.
We were, however, met with constant news spread about a highly contagious respiratory virus. I, ignorantly, didn't think too much about it because i aligned it with being something as common as the flu. I had very easily been able to get over the flu whenever I got it, and so did the rest of my family members.
Even when I didn't think too much of the virus going around, the news hit my job pretty hard. We could not properly take care of patients with Covid-19, so our patient numbers were going down - and FAST. Understandably, our patients, who tended to be on the older side, did not want to come out in public with the risk of being exposed to this virus. With no patients coming into our hospital, layoffs quickly followed.
I actually managed our office, so my job was secure. But, my office of 4 employees became an office of 2 employees, me and our doctor. I was immensely stressed for weeks on end. I was very cautious at all times because I saw how it was affecting the world around me. I luckily never got sick, and my family was spared from the effects of it as well.
I didn't mind the lockdown in place and having to distance myself from everyone around me in public. I strongly believe this should always be done, regardless. I feel people became more aware of keeping themselves clean, washing their hands, and disinfecting areas around them. It also made pathway for going to school online and working from home! I strongly benefit from both. I am able to spend more time with my children, study, and work without as much stress.
Thank you so much!
