ECE: Theories

Real-World Learning Scenario

Foundational Theories

There are several theories of child development that inform ECE programs. The seven most prominent theories are: cognitive developmental, behaviorism, social learning theory, sociocultural development, psychosocial theory, attachment theory, and ecological systems theory. There is no one theory that is correct; instead, we use information from all of these theories to inform how we design early childhood classrooms.

Evaluation criteria

  • Theoretical Understanding and Synthesis: Learner accurately explains and develops connections to relevant theories and practical applications.
  • Strategic Application: Strategic application and implementation are directly supported by the chosen theory.

Congnitive Developmental Theory

Overview: The Cognitive Developmental Theory was developed by Jean Piaget. The theory states that children move through childhood in four stages:

Cognitive Development Theory activity

Welcome to the world of Cognitive Development Theory! In this activity, we will immerse ourselves in thinking about how to integrate and implement Piaget's theory of cognitive development in children, which will stimulate our imagination and lead us to discover new ways to approach challenges. Get ready to think innovatively!

Constructivism

Cognitive Development Theory also explains how children acquire new knowledge, a constructivist approach known as Constructivism. The theory states that children must use their five senses to interact with objects within their environment to gain new information. It dictates that new knowledge build on previous knowledge.

Behaviorism

Based on the work of John Watson, B.F. Skinner and Ivan Pavlov, Behaviorism focuses on children's observable behaviors and actions. The theory states that external cues, known as reinforcers, shape children's behavior, either encouraging or discouraging specific behaviors through a process called conditioning.

Social Learning Theory

Social Learning Theory are based on the works by Albert Bandura. The theory focuses on how children observe and learn behaviors of those around them, including media, to use as a model for their own behaviors.

Sociocultural Development

Founded by Lev Vygotsky, Sociocultural Development Theory asserts that social interactions and culture are significant for cognitive development.

Sociocultural Development activity

Sociocultural theory is represented in online learning games that emphasize that learning occurs through social interaction, with more knowledgeable others providing guidance. Games that encourage collaboration, provide cultural contexts, and facilitate learning through social experiences, which can boost motivation and skill development, like social-emotional skills and problem-solving emobdy this theory.

Psychosocial Theory

Developed by Erik Erikson, the theory states that human development is characterized by a series of stages. Each stage represents a transition of time for learning and development.

In this phase, we immerse ourselves in the exploration of new concepts and relevant data. Get ready to absorb key information and reflect on its meaning and application in our task. It's time to expand our cognitive horizons!

Attachment Theory

Developed by Mary Ainworth and John Bowlby, the theory proposes four types of bonds or attachment patterns that a child can have with its caregiver.
