Overpopulation is playing a major role in the shift in climate, lack of resources and pollution issues the Earth is experiencing today.

Overpopulation:
the condition of having a population so dense as to cause environmental deterioration, an impaired quality of life, or a population crash (Merriam-Webster).

How does my chosen topic impact the natural processes of Earth's minerals and rocks? Overpopulation's impact on the Earth's systems is huge and so incredibly widespread. When human population increases, we see issues such as deforestation, pollution and resource depletion. When speaking of the impact of overpopulation on minerals and rocks specifically, maybe the most detrimental consequence is mining. Mining for minerals increases as the demand grows. The impact of mining is far spread due to the intrusive manner of extracting these geological materials from the Earth. Once minerals have been extracted, clean up of the land and leftover material can deem an area unhabitable. As the need for resources grows and mining operations increase, more of the Earth's minerals and rocks are lost. New resources are not able to from at a rate faster than we are using them (Greenfield, 2024).
How is overpopulation impacted by earthquakes?
A great example of how earthquakes impact overpopulation is the event that took place in September 1999 in Taiwan. The country had experienced an major increase in population in the years leading up to this earthquake so many people were forced to live near "earthquake zones" because of a lack of space. This earthquake ripped through Taiwan, knocking down thousands of bulidings and killing 2,100 people. In these cases, there is such an urgent need for housing that buildings are built quickly and not up to code. This results in many unneccessary deaths (Life, 2000).
How does overpopulation impact the natural processes of Earth's water and water systems?
Overpopulation plays a major role in water issues all across the Earth. Areas that were once untouched by humans and their continuous demand for resources, espscially water, are now disappearing at an incredible rate. Water scarcity, water pollution and climate change are a few of the major effects of our growing population. According to The Environmental Impacts of Overpopulation (Tal, A., 2025), the demand for freshwater increased over 600% between the years of 1970 and 2020. Water scarcity effects the United States, but is more of an issue in highly populated countries like India. The demand is so high in countries like this that freshwater lakes and rivers face issues such as being overpumped and pollution from runoff. Overpumping often osccurs in areas that are experiencing drought. Water is pumped from bodies of water to try to save crops. This is especially true in Syria. A country that experienced years of drought and water scarcity.

- Water Scarcity
- Land Degradation
- Habitat Destruction
- Climate Changes
- Overfishing
