Prima guerra di indipendenza
Il 1848 è un anno di grandi rivoluzioni in tutta Europa. In Italia, le rivolte cominciano a Palermo, nel Gran Ducato di Toscana e nel Regno di sardegna, dove si ottengono Costituzioni. Solo il governo austriaco non concede niente e così Venezia e Milano insorgono. A Milano i cittadini combattono per cinque giorni (Le Cinque giornate di Milano) e sconfiggono gli austriaci. Milano e Venezia non hanno però un esercito per combattere. Carlo Alberto, re del Regno di Sardegna, decide allora di aiutare il popolo lombardo-veneto. Anche gli altri sovrani d’Italia mandano propri soldati. All’inizio l’esercito piemontese sconfigge gli austriaci. Milano, Venezia, Modena e Parma proclamano allora l’unione con il Regno di Sardegna. Gli altri sovrani però sono preoccupati, perché temono un eccessivo rafforzamento del regno di Carlo Alberto e così ritirano i loro soldati.

PRIMO NUCLEO ITALIANO
È questa la Seconda guerra di indipendenza dell’Italia (1859). In seguito alla Seconda guerra di indipendenza, si forma il primo nucleo dell’Italia unita nelle regioni del nord e del centro: ora Piemonte, Sardegna, Lombardia, Emilia Romagna e Toscana sono unite in un unico stato. Per avere un’Italia completamente unita mancano ancora il centro-sud e la Sicilia. Giuseppe Garibaldi organizza un esercito di mille volontari che il 5 maggio 1860. Il Veneto si unisce qualche anno più tardi (Terza guerra di indipendenza, 1866).
Ma perché il focus si sposta in Crimea?
Cavour, primo ministro del Regno di Sardegna, riesce a convincere il re a parteciparvi. Le conseguenze di questa guerra sono molto positive per il Regno di Sardegna, perché Cavour può parlare dei problemi dell’Italia divisa al Congresso di Parigi che si tiene alla fine della guerra. Francia e Inghilterra sono sensibili ai problemi dell’Italia divisa.
