The 4C's of Technology

Empowering Learners through Communication, Collaboration, Critial Thinking and Creativity

Famous Quotes

"Great Communication Begins with Connection." ~Oprah Winfrey~

Why This List?

After reading about the two sets of 4Cs, I was drawn to the one that includes: communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. I was immediately drawn to this list because these are all words that I hear and use daily with my teaching. It's not that I haven't heard the other words, but this set resonates the most with who I am and what I do for a living.

Introduction

TThe 4Cs: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Creativity, are key skills needed for 21st centure learning. Technology has become the greatest enhancement of these skills by giving students and educators the tools to explore, create and connect to all things.

Communication

Definition: Effective communication is essential in the digital age. It involves expressing ideas clearly, actively listening, and adapting to various platforms (e.g., emails, video calls, social media). Strong communication skills enable collaboration and understanding. Using different types of digital tools to express ideas clearly and conncect with others is the best way to communicate. Examples of what this looks like: - Using Google Slides or Cnava to create a digital presentation. - Using Padlet to share ideas from a class discussion. How would I use it in my class or future role? - I would use the different forms of communication to help my students and colleagues make their own connections to a real audience and express their ideas.

Collaboration

Definition: Technology connects people across borders. Collaborative tools facilitate teamwork, whether in virtual environments or physical spaces. Successful collaboration requires empathy, compromise, and leveraging diverse perspectives.

Zoom Breakout Rooms to solve problems.

Group projects with Google Docs.

I would use these different types of elements in my classroom to build teamwork and share learning experiences about each of my students or colleagues.

Technology constantly evolves, and critical thinking helps us navigate this landscape. It involves analyzing information, evaluating sources, and making informed decisions. Critical thinkers question assumptions and seek innovative solutions.

How will I use this in my ckassroom/futrue role? I will use projects the involve inquiry-based learning that has students or staff ask questions, do the research and evaluate information based off the the digital tool they used. Then they would have to create a short presentation to show how they would use it to solve a problem. Some tools they would have access to would be Google Sheets where they collect and analyze data. PhET or Gizmos that use interactive simulations and they could use it for any math or science activity. And they would have access to online data so they could evaluate if their sources are credible or not.

Creativity

Technology fuels creativity by providing tools for design, coding, and multimedia production. Creativity drives innovation, allowing us to solve complex problems, design user-friendly interfaces, and envision a better future.
Ways to show a student or colleagues creativity would be to use technology tools that can foster their creativity or that can have others building off their ideas. Tools such as Canva to design a poster or infographic. Creating a book using an interactive storybook creator or even having them record their stories of things they have created or thought about creating in a podcast.

I will use any tool that is available to my colleagues or students that helps them express their ideas through digital media and creative design.

Let''s Bring it All Together

The 4Cs of Learning are:

This list of the 4Cs work best when they are combined, especially when they are used in an educational setting.

"Technology alone is not enough"

What could this look like? - Students reserach (Critical Thinking), an issue in their community, collaborate (Collaboration) with each other to design a solution, communicate (Communication) what they found, and present through a creative digital tool they have chosen (Creativity).

-Steve Jobs

Final Thoughts

Think about this the next time you use a new digital tool; technology alone doesn't make learning powerful -- how we use it to inspire creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication with our students and ourselves is.

Did you know? As educators, integrating the 4Cs helps students thinking critically, become problem solvers, and express their own ideas through technology.
