What is the Reproductive System?

Reveal Answer

It is a set of organs and structures that work together to ensure the survival of the species by producing offspring.

Next

The Human Reproductive System

It has four specific functions:

To produce gametes (egg and sperm cells)

To store and transport these reproductive cells

To nurture offspring as it develops

To produce hormones

Female Reproductive system

1. Uterus
2. Vagina
3. Cervix
4. Fallopian Tube

Female Reproductive Organs

Oviduct

Ovary

(FALLOPIAN TUBE) Passageway for eggs from the ovaries to the uterus and provides the site for fertilisation by the sperm

Produces eggs (ova) and female sex hormones like estrogen and progesterone

Uterus

Vagina

Where a fertilised egg implants and grows into a fetus during pregnancy

Receives the penis during sexual reproduction, allows the menstrual blood to exit the body and lets the baby passes through during childbirth

Cervix

Allows menstrual blood to flow from the uterus and serves as a pathway for sperm to enter the uterus

Next

Male Reproductive Organs

Prostate

Vas deferens

Produces a fluid that mixes with sperm to form semen, nourishing and protecting sperm

Carries sperm from the testes to the urethra during ejaculation

Testes

Urethra

Passageway for both urine and semen when exiting the body

Produces sperm and testosterone—male sex hormones that affect the way bodies develop

Penis

Used for both the elimination of urine from the body and the delivery of sperm for sexual reproduction

Activity

Work Collaboratively in groups of 5 to create a diagram outlining the journey of sperm to the egg for fertilization. Ensure to include at least six (6) parts of the reproductive system You may use your devices for additional support.

Menstrual Cycle

Next

Menstrual Cycle

It is a natural, recurring process in the female reproductive system, lasting about 28 days on average. It involves body preparations for potential pregnancy.

What is the purpose of the menstrual cycle?

The primary purpose of the menstrual cycle in females is to prepare the body for pregnancy. Each cycle involves the maturation and release of an egg (ovulation) and the thickening of the uterine lining (endometrium) to support a potential embryo. If fertilization doesn’t occur, the thickened lining is shed during menstruation, allowing the cycle to begin again.

The Miracle of Life

6 Months

If fertilization occurs the embryo (the egg that is now fertilized) goes on to implant itself into the wall of the endometrium and begins to develop into a fetus and then into a baby over the course of 9 months

Summary

The Human Reproductive System

Main Organs

Menstrual Cycle

It is a specialised set of organs and structures responsible for producing, transporting and facilitating the union of male and female reproductive cells, ultimately creating offspring.

The male parts include the testes, prostate, vas deferens, urethra and penis. The female parts include the ovary, fallopian tube, uterus, cervix and vagina.

It is a recurring process (approximately 28 days) in females characterised by changes in the uterus and ovaries.
