Electricity, Magnetism and Gravity
Phenomenon: Junkyard Show
What do we call the form of energy that results from the flow of electric charge?
What do we call a physical property of particles or objects that cause them to attract or repel each other without touching?
What do we call the positively (+) charged particles that are in the nucleus of an atom?
What do we call the negatively (-) charged particles that orbit the nucleus of an atom?
What do we call a the space around a charged particle that exerts an electric force on other charged particles?
ELECTRON
PROTON
Name the parts of an atom
Can you explain this phenomenon?
STATIC ELECTRICITY
THE BUILD UP OF ELECTRIC CHARGES ON AN OBJECT
When you rub a balloon against your hair, electrons from the atoms that make up your hair transfer to the balloon, which makes your hair positively charged due to electron loss. The balloon becomes negatively charged due to electron gain. When you hold the balloon several centimeters from your head, your hair stands up due to the attraction between the two opposite charges.
MAGNETISM
A force that a magnet exerts over a distance which includes both attraction and repulsion.
LIKE CHARGES REPEL
UNLIKE CHARGES ATTRACT
WHAT IS THE REGION AROUND A MAGNET THAT IS AFFECTED BY MAGNETIC FORCES CALLED?
MAGNETIC FIELD
The magnetic lines of force that would be produced if the magnets were sprinkled with iron filings are shown in each diagram.
Magnetic Domains
MAGNETIC metals like iron, nickel and cobalt have domains oriented north and south.
NON-MAGNETIC metals like silver and lead will have randomly oriented domains.
Is it possible for unmagnetized metal to become magnetized?
Will these two magnets attract or repel each other?
ATTRACT!
Will these two magnets attract or repel each other?
REPEL!
ATTRACT
REPEL
What happens if you cut a magent in half?
What will happen to these magnets as they get closer to each other?
REPEL!
What will happen to these magnets as they get closer to each other?
ATTRACT!
ELECTROMAGNETS
What is an electromagnet and how is it different from a permanent magnet?
How can you increase the strength of an electromagnet, and what factors affect its strength?
ELECTROMAGNETS
What is Gravity?
Gravity is the force that pulls objects towards each other. It is the force of attraction between any two objects that have mass.
What 2 things affect gravity?
MASS
DISTANCE
Mass changes depending on location.
True
False
The force of gravity between two objects decreases as the distance between them increases.
