Osteoporosis

Post-menopausal women are at risk.
Normal Bone

Normal, healthy bone with a dense consistency that provides strength and support.

Osteoporotic Bone

Osteoporotic bone is less dense, notice the thin bone and how porous it is (more black space), this results in fragility and increases the risk of fractures (broken bones).

Spine

The spine is a common area for osteoporotic fractures.

Hip

The hip is a common area for osteoporotic fractures.

Factors Contributing to Development

Post-menopausal women develop this condition. Reaching peak bone mass in the late teens and 20s is essential, particularly for girls.

Vitamin D enhances calcium and phosphorus absorption. Protein (collagen) provides the scaffolding for calcium and phophorus. Calcium and phosphorus provide structure to bones. Potassium helps presvent calcium loss. Sodium will enhance calcium loss. Exercise stimulates the build up of bone.
