return to the present
Oh, no! Our time machine has broken down. To repair it, we need to find some parts that are in different time periods, without them we will never be able to return to our present. Visit the events and complete the challenges to gather all the necessary parts. But be careful, if you fail during the search, the time doors may close, making your return increasingly difficult.

The River Deal
In 1624, a group of settlers from the Netherlands (Holland) sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. They wanted to start a colony where they could make money through trade. They chose a location along the Hudson River, which provided a perfect path for ships to travel inland and carry goods to the ocean. The settlers built small trading posts and forts, including one on Manhattan Island that they named New Amsterdam. Here, Dutch merchants traded beaver furs and other valuable items with local Lenape and Iroquois tribes. They exchanged European goods — such as cloth, tools, and metal pots — for animal furs that were worth a fortune in Europe. Unlike the Puritans in New England, the Dutch were not focused on creating a strict religious society. They welcomed people of different backgrounds and faiths, as long as they helped the colony’s business grow. New Netherland became known as a place of diversity, trade, and opportunity — a sign of how money, geography, and cooperation could shape a colony’s success.

The Takeover
By the 1660s, New Netherland had become a busy and valuable trading colony. Its harbor at New Amsterdam bustled with ships carrying furs, lumber, and food to Europe. England, however, wanted control of this powerful port to link its colonies along the Atlantic coast. In 1664, the English king sent warships to seize the colony from the Dutch. The settlers—more interested in trade than in fighting—surrendered peacefully. To reward his brother for helping, the king gave the colony to the Duke of York, who renamed it New York. Under English rule, the colony continued to grow. English merchants expanded trade, more settlers arrived, and New York became a crossroads for cultures and commerce.

The Holy Experiment
After gaining New York, the Duke of York gave part of his land to two loyal friends—Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret. They wanted to attract settlers to the new colony of New Jersey, so they made several promises. Anyone who moved there would be offered religious freedom, generous land grants, and the chance to help elect local leaders. These guarantees, written into the colony’s charter, were powerful. Farmers, merchants, and religious groups—including many Quakers—moved to New Jersey for a fresh start. The colony soon became known for fertile farmland, busy port towns, and its spirit of fairness.
