Mini Hydric plant:

Campo Maior, located in the Alentejo region of Portugal near the Spanish border, is developing small sustainable energy and water projects. One of them is a mini-hydroelectric system linked to the Abrilongo Dam and the Xévora River. This project, part of the Xévora Hydro-Agricultural Development, aims to use local water resources efficiently to generate renewable electricity and support irrigation for around 1,500 hectares of farmland. With an investment of about 25 million euros, it promotes both clean energy production and sustainable agriculture. The Campo Maior mini-hydro project reflects Portugal’s commitment to green energy, climate action, and the EU’s sustainability goals, showing how rural areas can innovate and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Castle of Campo Maior:

During our visit to the Castle of Campo Maior, we first watched a video about its history. It explained how the castle was built, how it was used over the centuries to protect the town, and the important battles that took place there. After the video, we walked around the castle and visited several historical points of interest. We saw the tower that exploded in 1732 when lightning hit the gunpowder storage, destroying part of the castle and the town. We also visited a church inside the castle walls and a museum area where we learned about how the castle was rebuilt after the explosion and how it looked before the reconstruction. It was a very interesting visit that helped us understand the strategic and historical importance of Campo Maior and its castle on the border between Portugal and Spain.
