I began Final Fantasy 14 because of the expansions. This was my second attempt at A Realm Reborn (the main, free story from FF14). I abandoned the first because of how bad the writing was. I was tempted to pay the extra fee to skip the ARR story, but ultimately decided that it would be a good way to learn how to play my chosen job. This turned out to be a good decision because I can't even begin to stress how much I hated playing Summoner in FF14 compared to FFXI. I did settle into Red Mage. While it was a major departure from the MMO gameplay I was accustomed to, I did enjoy it nontheless and will contionue playing it into the expansions.

Likes

  • Magnificent world design
  • (Mostly) Better quest system than FFXI
  • Plenty of quests and activities
  • Most (if not all) ARR content can be done solo
  • Most of the main story is awful
  • Gameplay revolves too much around a set skill rotation
  • Elements mean nothing

I started and gave up on Sekiro seven times before it finally clicked. Combining fast-paced and simplistic combat with forgiving parry windows, Sekiro is easy to pick up and difficult to master. Unlike most From Software games, the narrative sits front and center, telling a story rich with lore and, at times, emotional. The boss fights are the main event, as always with From Software. Every boss fight is difficult but fair. Every time I lost a fight, I knew exactly what I did wrong and learned from my mistakes. Sekiro is demanding but rewarding, has the most satisfying combat of any game I have played, is one of the best games I have ever played, and the most difficult I have finished.
