NSS PA - Planning Expectations

  • Adoption of Universal Lesson Plan Template as created by CIA Team (2025-26 Academic Year)
  • Weekly Submission of Lesson Plans via Dropbox in Teams Channel (2025-26)
  • Use of established curriculum (Hampton phased out at the end of 2025-26)
  • Use of adopted curriculum resources (HMH, SAVAS, Everyway, Wayfinder, IXL)
  • Alignment to PA Standards (PDE SAS, PA DLM - Introduced in 2025-26)
  • Fidelity of Planning

What is not expected...

  • Countless Hours of Planning
  • Multiple Pages of Lesson Plans
  • A Listing of EVERY Standard
  • Two Different Sets of Plans
  • Paying for Lesson Plans or Materials
  • Perfection

More on the Why....

  • Lesson Plan Templates were created to begin standardizing practice across New Story PA
  • The Excel format was chosen to standardize elements and format and for data collection purposes (CIA Team is collecting feedback)
  • Standards Aligned Instruction for all students in accordance with PDE expectations
  • Data driven Instruction and Accountability
  • Alignment with Research Based practice and effective teaching practice

Where are we in our current growth?

The Danielson Framework

  • A framework to help educators improve their practice
  • Designed around 4 specific domains within the role of the teacher
  • The four domains are divided into 22 sub categories designed to capture the complexity and art of teaching
  • The Pennsyvlvania Department of Education (PDE) adopted the framework as part of the Educator Effectiveness Model
  • Domains consist of Planning, Classroom Environment, Instruction, and Professional Responsibilities
  • Rubric based on observation and evidence of practice

1a Applying Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy 1b Knowing and Valuing Students 1c Setting Instructional Outcomes 1d Using Resources Effectively 1e Planning Coherent Instruction 1f Designing and Analyzing Assessment

Standards

  • Using the QR code and your phone or the padlet link at the bottomk of the page complete a response in the 2nd column in the padlet

Academic Standards are the content specific knowledge and skills students should master at each grade level.

Demystifying Standards

PA Academic Standards

The PASA DLM is a bridge between the state grade level content standards and academic expectations for student with significant cognitive disabilities
The SAS portal contains a variety of resources for instruction and includes the adopted list of acacemic standards across grade level content areas

I don't know which standard to use

The Standards are so complex, I can't teach them.

They are too hard for my kids

There are too many standards to teach.

My kids don't take standardized tests, so it doesn't matter.

Applying a Standard

Activity

What subject is being taught with this activity? What is the general grade level?

Communicate

Showing enthusiasm, giving a smile, and maintaining eye contact with your audience can be your best allies when it comes to telling stories that excite and pique the interest of the public: 'The eyes, chico. They never lie'. This will help you make a connection with your audience. Leave them speechless!

Design

If you want to provide additional information or develop the content in more detail, you can do so through your oral presentation. We recommend that you practice your voice and rehearse: the best improvisation is always the most worked!

Plan

What you read: interactivity and animation can make the most boring content fun. At Genially, we use AI (Awesome Interactivity) in all our designs, so you can level up with interactivity and turn your content into something that adds value and engages.

Structure

When carrying out a presentation, two objectives must be pursued: conveying information and avoiding yawns. To achieve this, it may be a good practice to create an outline and use words that engrave in the minds of your audience.

Standards Are:

  • Framework to guide instructional outcomes, define learning goals
  • Measureable (Assessment)
  • Used to develop curriculum and align resources
  • Maintains consistency of Instruction
  • Data from assessments used to measure educational quality
  • Define what students should know and be able to do

Standards Are Not:

  • They are not Curriculum and resources
  • They do not guide how to teach
  • They are not the materials used
  • They do not replace teaching (pedagogy)
  • They do not determine achievement
Activity

Worksheets, readings, videos, and pretend play of garbage collectors.

  • EFL Skills Targeted: DLS-SIT1-25, M1-11, T-HC1-11, RTL1-14, LR12-17
