What is it?

It means that students create projects as part of their learning experience. Students develop a project from start to finish, making decisions on how to proceed, incorporating subject matter into the project, and producing a project that represents their knowledge.

Directions:

Examples:

Student Choices

  • Keep tasks and directions not over-detailed, so students have a choice; this matters.
  • As a teacher, you must permit student choices in project-based learning
  • In more advanced projects, students could choose the type of project they would like to complete
  • Student choice allows for the development of creative thinking, development of innovation, and decision-making skills for the Information Age.

Collaboration and Teamwork

In project-based learning, students work in groups to complete a task. They can review both a group grade and n individual grade for the project.

Teachers coach students. by showing or telling them how to improve what they are doing or how to better follow directions and meet project requirements.

Teacher Coaching and Feedback

After handing out two seeds and two pots of soil to each group, Mr. Walls gave directions to students so they could correctly plant the seeds. When the seeds were planted, he showed students how to properly water a marigold. He then explained how to take pictures with the digital camera to document the life cycle for the plants. Near the end of the project, Mr. Walls gave instructions on how to create a popplet for the final project
