Core of Industry & Innovation
During the Market Revolution, the Northern region of the US became primarily focused on industrial and commercial industry. As cities grew rapidly, there were new innovations like the Lowell Factory System, the spinning jenny, and the idea of interchangeable parts which allowed for mass production. New modes of transportation were also formed through canals such as the Erie Canal and the Cumberland Road, which transformed transport and trade for the nation. The North’s busy factories gave jobs to many workers, including women, who started to experience new roles and participate in the workforce. New innovations like railroads and steam engines made it easier for people to travel around the country, which led to increased migration and represented the beginning of a new era of national connectivity. Furthermore, the invention of the telegraph transformed the way information could be shared through the transmission of morse code. This area of our park will demonstrate how the North’s economy and way of life were primarily focused on automation and large-scale industries, which eventually set the stage for America’s rise to prominence as an industrial power.

Power Wheel Coaster
Invention: Power-Driven Spinning Jenny Visitors will ride on a high-speed roller coaster that has many loops to represent the idea of the spinning wheel on the spinning Jenny. During the ride, bursts of steam will be emitted to create an environment of factories during this time period. In the background, there will be massive mechanical looms, capturing the riders’ attention through flashing and further contributing to the factory environment. Historically, the motorized and automatic spinning jenny revolutionized the textile industry by allowing one single worker to spin multiple spools of thread at the same time. With multiple spools being woven, the spinning jenny greatly increased the productivity and efficiency of this industry and gave rise to many factories. This innovation symbolized the North’s industrial rise, which shifted the labor from in-home production to factories and fueling the Market Revolution’s economic growth.

Interchangeable coaster
Invention: Interchangeable Parts This interactive ride will take guests through a model of a factory based on Eli Whitney’s creation of interchangeable parts. Riders get into carts and take a tour of the factory at varying speeds to get the thrill of a traditional ride while also learning about interchangeable parts. While riding at the slow sections, they can put the components of a musket together with machines around them and sparks flying to represent the factory atmosphere. Workers will give instructions on how to construct the musket while demonstrating how parts of the gun could be quickly replaced or repaired, which was a huge change from traditionally handmaking different pieces for each thing. In the fast sections, the cart will go through twists and turns at high speeds. In the past, this innovation transformed manufacturing by starting the process of mass production and standardization, which greatly increased the speed and efficiency at which weapons were able to be produced. Eventually, this idea of interchangeable parts was applied not only for weapons, but spread to many different industries to apply mass production methods. By the end of the ride, guests will have been able to experience the start of modern assembly lines and the arrival of new industrial methods.

Sewing Machine Stitch Up
Invention: Sewing Machine In the Sewing Machine Stitch Up, riders will go through a spinning-ride experience centered around Elias Howe’s invention of the sewing machine. Riders sit in a seat shaped like a giant thread of yarn and go in repeated circles, like a carousel at fast speeds. Additionally, the seats rise up and down as mechanical needles rise and fall on the side. The high speed of the ride represents the rapid transformation from home to factory sewing that happened in the mid 1800s. During the Market Revolution, the sewing machine increased clothing production speed and lowered costs tremendously compared to doing it by hand. It enabled the mass production of clothes in factories, which widened access to fashion and created a booming textile industry.

Frontier Trail & Trade Routes
The Western side of the US was a land of opportunity and innovation. The people settling in these new lands used inventions like the steel plow and the mechanical reaper to farm more efficiently compared to traditional methods. Roads like the Cumberland Road and waterways like the Erie Canal connected the regions on the borders to eastern markets, which contributed to trade and migration. New transportation inventions like the steam boats and railroads made the country seem like it was shrinking in size since longer distances could be traveled much quicker and new networks were created. The Western region was a place where the prosperous future of America was being ushered in by settlers and inventors. This section of our part invites visitors to experience the excitement of frontier life and the developing technology of the nation.

Cotton Kingdom & Frenzy Farms
The Southern part of the United States was primarily dominated by agriculture like cotton farming, which grew rapidly with the invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney. This invention allowed for the cotton to be processed more efficiently, but it also deepened the hold of slavery since the owners of plantations expanded their labor needs to meet the rising demand. Since agriculture was their focus, the South had many innovations like the steel plow and mechanical reaper to improve farming efficiency. The economy of the Southern region was still largely reliant on slave labor, but it also had a growing population of farmers and settlers that were making use of these new technologies to better the economy. In this section, visitors will learn about the rapidly growing economy of the south while also recognizing the negative impacts that it brought with it.

Cotton Gin
Invention: Cotton Gin Join us on the Cotton Gin Carousel, where as riders glide on cotton ball designed seats, they experience how the cotton gin, created by Eli Whitney, transformed Southern agriculture by allowing cotton fibers to be separated from its seeds, which was a process that previously took hours by hand. This innovation made cotton the dominant trade because it became a highly profitable cash crop. However, it also had detrimental impacts on slaves by increasing the demand for enslaved labor since it was becoming a widely grown crop. This deepened the South’s economic dependence on slavery.

Steel Plow Pioneer Trail
Invention: Steel Plow In this trail, riders get into an old fashioned tractor car and ride the Steel Plow Pioneer Trail across America’s prairies. To simulate the many hills and rough land of America, this trail is sure to be a bumpy and thrill-filled ride. Riders plow through the frontier fields using John Deere’s steel plow that tilled areas much faster and more effectively than wooden plows. This invention revolutionized agriculture by allowing farmers to cut through tough prairie soil in the American Midwest, which had been previously difficult to farm. With this new plow, the soil didn't stick to the polished steel, which allowed it to till more land faster and easier than traditional plows. This significantly increased crop production and boosted the U.S. economy making the Midwest the nation's breadbasket.

The Reaper’s Harvest
Invention: Mechanical Reaper The Reaper’s Harvest is a fast paced ride that allows riders to experience how the mechanical reaper transformed farming. Riders strap into their seats in front of a giant screen with 3D goggles showing wheat fields. The ride swerves and tilts as mechanical arms on the screen cut wheat, which will make riders feel that they are actually in a mechanical reaper harvesting crop. The invention of the mechanical reaper greatly reduced the length of the crop harvesting process. Before its invention, harvesting was gruesome labor done by hand and the process took a long time. But with the introduction of the mechanical reaper by Cyrus Hall McCormick, farmers could cut as much grain in a day as several workers combined traditionally. This ride demonstrates how mechanized harvesting increased agricultural productivity, encouraged large scale farming, and helped feed America’s urban workforce.
