Language Learner Strategies
- Timely Feedback
- Teacher Credibility. If the student believes that you are actually able to help them learn, then you will get farther with that student.
- PHONICS!!! In all subjects!!
- Classroom Management. Pull students close to you.
- Home connections. Communicate with home. This will have a huge impact. Many times, the parents don't know what is going on and they want to learn too. This also shows that we care. Find a way to make newcomers feel welcomed.
- Remember cultural differences. Some cultures the kids are seen and not heard.
- GIVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE STUDENTS TO TALK ALOT!
- Communicate over corrections.
Language Learner Strategies
- If they are only writing for ECR or SCR, they that is High Stakes. Give them opportunities to write for fun. Let them use colors, TAKE AWAY THE ERASER.
- Give opportunities for authentic trasnfer. Really good conversations, really good reading, really good writing.
- GET THEM TALKING, READING, AND WRITING.
Language Learner Anti-Strategies
- Labeling students....Remember that all kids can learn
- Class size is not something we can control. If we get kids talking, class size becomes irrelevant.
- Ability grouping is detrimental to student success.
- Remember that generations in the past may have recieved corporal punishment for not speaking english. This may be a stigma that families still place on schools and in turn, tell their kids to not talk at school.
Innovation to Create Classroom Engagement (GONZALES)
Projects
Comic Books
Plickers
- Fun Engaging Interactive Game/Activity

- Done with guiding questions or even multiple choice test or assessment questions
- Student specific and can be for any subjects
- Can be used for a grade as well as even just a quick exit ticket/bellwork
- At the end of the novels you read having a project is an engaging activity for the students to do.
- Have them do something with an artisitc representation (poster, digital art, booklet) explaining the book
- Making a playlist (song that desribe events in the story)
- I was not seeing how this was going to be a good thing due to it being "comic books" and I know how it looks but I honestly saw the benefit of it.
- They make a fun and engaging lesson due to students liking comic books.
- There is science, math, reading and social studies comic books.
We live and teach in a perpetual state of overwhelm.
Hurry and love are incompatible.
Wealth of knowledge/information creates a poverty of attention.
Reading with Lenses (gonzales)
Characterization- describing a character
Lenses- the skills (TEKS) when reading a passage.
Students will go with the teacher as a whole and go look for specific characters and how they acted in the story to help describe the type of character they are using the evidence in the story.
Students will go and read the text but have a purpose to read the text. They will use a different color for each one as they are going through. Having anchor charts up of each TEKS will be beneficial for what they are looking for as they read.
- Look for speaker tags, commas, quotations (dialouge)
- Identify how many characters and how they are acting towards the other characters or in general in the story.
- Have 3-5 TEKS or skills that the students will be looking for as they read. ( context clues, prefix/suffix, multiple meaning words.
Now the students will be given a sentence frame of question starters to make questions themselves. They will use what they have found in the text with the skills to come up with a question. They can make a cc,p/s,mm, or characterization question.
- Pull together the class and share what they underlined. Have a whole class discusssion over a new TEKS or skill and teach it all together using that text used already. (characterization)
Write me a letter (Gonzales)
- Filling in the heart map for special people that hold a place in your "heart".
- Let your students pick who they want from it "nursing home".
- Inside the book you will see there is a sequence of all the ways and types of letters you can write to that person you choose.
- It tells you in order on what to say to that person and using text structures to write it.
Get your shakespeare ears on (Gonzales)

- In the handout you will see the two sides. One side is the writing side and the other is a organizer for Modern English and Shakespeare's English. We will fill out the Shakespeare's English together really quickly.
- The right side is a "recipe, gossip, or advice" quick write. You will write one of the following using as much words from the left "Modern English" to write one of the following choices. (SKIP LINES)
- You will read your recipe, advice or gossip and then go mark out the words that you used from the chart and replace them with the Shakespeare's English in your writing instead of the Modern English.
